In You season 4 part 1, Joe doesn’t hold himself back from looking for Marienne. He eventually does find her, but their reunion doesn’t go as he expected it to.
While navigating his new life as Jonathan Moore, Joe often reminisces about how he ended up here. After escaping the life he had with Love, Joe searched for Marienne, the only person who understood him.
He follows her to Paris, the most romantic city in the world. He haunts every artist there, hoping to cross paths with Marienne someday.
It takes weeks, but Joe finally finds one of Marienne’s paintings at an event. He gets her email ID and learns that she is in London, visiting an art fair.
Joe goes to this London art fair and finally sees Marienne there. He observes how much she has changed. She is no longer the buttoned-up Madre Linda Librarian.
They both glance at each other. Joe removes his cap to reveal himself. Marienne first smiles at him, but soon her face starts showing fear. Marienne runs away from Joe, who continues to follow her
Joe confronts Marienne
Joe finds Marienne hiding in a building. He finally gets to talk to her. She initially brings out a pocket knife, but Joe manages to get that out of her hand.
Joe claims that he thought she loved him and would be happy to see him. Marienne then confesses that she did love him, but the fact that he is standing here suggests that he is the one who has killed Love, and that terrifies her.
Marienne is, at this point, praying that she will see Juliette again in Paris. She asks Joe if he has killed anyone else. Joe is speechless, leaving Marienne in tears.
She says that he acts like he is a good man who did a bad thing and reminds him that he is a murderer. Joe attempts to convince her that she is wrong about him and says that he is going to prove it to her. Joe lets Marienne go and bids her goodbye.
Joe is offered a deal
While Joe was busy looking for Marienne, another person tailed him to London. Love’s father, Ray Quinn, sent Elliot Tannenberg to kill Joe.
Instead of killing Joe right away, Elliot offers him a deal. He claims that he is tired and wants his job done without hurting anyone, even Joe.
Elliot says that letting Joe go would cost more than what Ray pays him. He knows Joe has the money Love had in her bank account. He wants that in exchange for letting him go.
If that isn’t enough, Elliot also offers him the new identity of Jonathan Moore, a solid personality; he went to Columbia, has a good credit score, and has a work visa.
With Jonathan’s identity, Joe will easily get a job anywhere. The only thing he needs to do is keep a low profile. Elliot, on his side, will assure Ray that Joe is dead.
The last thing Elliot wants Joe to do in order to restart his life as Jonathan Moore is to take care of Marienne, as she now knows he is alive.
Does Joe kill Marienne?
Joe waits for Marienne at the station, where she is boarding a train to Paris at 8 a.m., but doesn’t kill her. He instead snatches her necklace and lets her board the train safe and sound.
Joe doesn’t kill Marienne to show her that he isn’t what she thinks he is—a killer. Once Marienne is on the train, Joe sends a picture of her necklace to Elliot, assuring him that the job is done.
