A romantic comedy with a supernatural twist, Love at First Kiss follows Javier, a man who has the power to see the future every time he kisses a girl. This allows him to get out of relationships before things go bad. The situation gets tough when he accidentally kisses his friend’s girlfriend and sees a happy future with her.
Plot summary
Love at First Kiss opens by introducing Javier, the owner of a struggling publishing house called Mon FORTE Editions. He also has a secret superpower which he discovered after his first kiss at 16.
Javier can see a relationship’s future whenever he kisses someone. As an adult, this allows him to have fun with the woman he’s dating and break up before things reach the difficult part.
Unfortunately, this earns him a reputation of a playboy, who is afraid of commitment. He also has very stern opinions about how to run things, resulting in a spiraling business.
His last hope for success is washed-out writer, Sonsoles Durán, who is writing a new book for him, hoping for a comeback. Grinding through life, the troubled Javi goes out to dinner with his best friend Roberto and his girlfriend Lucía. The latter also brings her best friend Esther as a potential date for Javi.
Roberto quickly heads home after food, and Esther insists they go out for another drink. Inside a club, Lucía opens up to Javi about how boring Roberto has become. A drunk Esther drags them to the dance floor and pushes them to kiss each other.
Even though it lasts for a split second, Javi has a vision of a beautiful future with Lucía during the kiss. It includes a happy married life and a bunch of kids.
Javi is troubled that the woman of his dreams is his best friend’s girlfriend. The next day, Lucía comes to see him at the publishing house to make sure things are not weird between them.
They agree to keep it normal and decide to attend a talk by famous author Santiago Doñate. Javi hopes of signing him for his company, but he rejects it as Mon FORTE Editions is in a lot of debt.
Not sure what to do next, Javi goes to his usual bar for a drink and befriends the eccentric bartender, Ariana. They head out, and after stealing a crepe maker from her ex’s place, they have a moment, and Javi turns her down, realizing that he indeed loves Lucía and must pursue her.
He speaks to Roberto about reconsidering his relationship as Lucía doesn’t seem happy. His friend misunderstands him and instead proposes to Lucía. As fate would have it, she breaks up with Roberto.
Feeling guilty, Javi asks Lucía to reconsider but is slightly relieved when she doesn’t. Elsewhere, Sonsoles sends in the first draft of her book, and Javi isn’t impressed with the ending.
Lucía suggests they give the manuscript to her colleagues and use them as a focus group to understand what works. When they give similar feedback and agree that a new ending can make the book sell, Javi is ecstatic.
He thanks Lucía and the two share a hug. This leads to them having sex, exactly like Javi saw in his vision. They initially decide to keep it a secret but start loving being with each other.
Love at First Kiss ending explained in detail:
What happens after Javi kisses Ariana?
As his relationship with Lucía develops, Javi runs into Ariana one day. She invites him over to her house, and they go to the roof. She tells him about her adventurous life, which has taken her to multiple countries.
Javi discreetly talks about his ability to know the future after the first kiss, and Ariana asks him to prove it. However, when they kiss, Javi doesn’t see anything except for the moment he is in.
He’s perplexed but considers that after finding the woman of her dreams in Lucía, he doesn’t need any more visions. He leaves Ariana’s place, determined to make things work with Lucía.
What happens to Roberto?
One day, Roberto shows up at the publishing house, still distraught about his breakup. He tries to open up about his pain and Javi suggests they go on a trip.
Unfortunately, he notices a picture of Javi and Lucía kissing on the former’s computer and understands the situation. Furious with the betrayal, he decides to leave, and Javi confesses that he kissed Lucía and saw the perfect future.
Roberto berates him for ruining his relationship and departs.
Do Javi and Lucía end up together?
The couple officially moves in together and lives the amazing life Javi foresaw. Unfortunately, this comes back to bite him. Lucía is troubled that she can never seem to surprise Javi as if he always knows what’s coming (which he does).
After a birthday trip to Marakesh fails to get an excited reaction out of her boyfriend, Lucía decides to take some time off from Javi and travels with Esther.
When she is gone, he decides to get her book signed by Santiago Doñate at one of his talks. He goes there and is surprised to see Roberto as a special guest.
After his falling out with Javi, Roberto closed down his podiatrist clinic and became involved with helping the underprivileged in other countries. He talks about what led to this decision and notices Javi in the audience.
The two argue but make things up after Javi apologizes. When Lucía returns, he realizes he’s been living too strictly because of his power and never allowed the mystery of the future to guide him.
Accepting that he was the one who came in between his best friend and his girlfriend, he sets up a meeting between them. Roberto and Lucía hit it off once again, and Javi quietly admits defeat.
We see him break up and move out of Lucía’s apartment.
Does Javi find love?
On the work side of things, Sonsoles gets in trouble when Javi realizes she plagiarized her latest book. She admits that it has been 10 years since her last hit, and she can’t figure out what to write.
Javi has a genius idea and introduces her to Ariana. The chirpy young woman encourages Sonsoles to break her creative block and brings out the writer from inside her.
While Lucía is away, Javi almost kisses Ariana but apologizes. She asks him to get his act together and stop acting like a sleazeball. Eventually, after his split with Lucía, Javi purchases a plane ticket to Australia and slips it into Ariana’s window.
She had told him earlier that she always wanted to go back to the country after spending some time there in the past. Now a changed man, Javi shares his ideas with fellow publishers and listens to critiques. His company is still in debt, but his improved attitude is a step in the right direction.
Sonsoles releases her book, which is a huge hit. Javi attends the success party and greets the guests, including the freshly patched-up Roberto and Lucía.
However, he is shocked to see Ariana there. She reveals that she couldn’t be bothered to back to Australia and used the ticket money to self-produce a podcast.
They talk for a bit, and Ariana says she knew she liked Javi and didn’t need to see the future to take the plunge. She heads out the door, and Javi follows her.
He says that he’s ready to come with her wherever the future takes them. They kiss as the screen fades to black.
