In True Detective: Night Country, Elizabeth Danvers, also known as Liz Danvers, is one of the main protagonists of the season. Jodie Foster plays Elizabeth Danvers.
Elizabeth Danvers is the Chief of Police in the town of Ennis. Liz’s only family is her stepdaughter, Leah, with whom she doesn’t share a great relationship.
It is implied that Liz once had a son named Holden, whom she possibly lost in an accident. Holden’s ghost keeps haunting Liz in her dreams and even Navarro as well.
Liz’s nature
Liz is a grumpy, no-nonsense detective. Hence, she doesn’t like to buy Navarro’s and townspeople’s beliefs in ghosts, spirit animals, or anything supernatural, which is considered common in the town of Ennis.
Liz is often criticized by her peers for being too manipulative and selfishly getting things done. Peter Prior, a young cop who dedicatedly listens to all of Liz’s orders, is often warned about her influence.
Liz is also hated by many in the town of Ennis, as she has had a fair share of affairs and is generally not good to them.
Liz’s arrival in Ennis
Liz is currently having an affair with Ted Connelly, her senior, who engineered her transfer to Ennis.
When Connelly claims that he sent Liz to Ennis because she had become a mess, Liz corrects him by stating that he knew she was going to take his job.
Connelly admits that Liz has been a better cop than him since day one but is terrible with people. After losing her son, Holden, and Jake, her behavior got worse.
Nobody wanted to work with Liz. Hence, he sent her to Ennis.
Liz and Navarro’s relationship
When it comes to the case at hand, Liz knew the Tsalal men’s case is going to be an impossible one—there aren’t going to be any answers.
Initially, Liz denies Navarro’s claim that the case is connected to Annie K’s case from six years ago. The moment she finds connections, she reluctantly teams up with Navarro.
Liz and Navarro had a falling out after the Wheeler case, considering how Navarro takes her cases, especially the ones involving women, more personally.
Liz needs Navarro’s help on the Tsalal men’s case because Navarro’s habit of taking cases personally makes her the only person who knows everything about Annie.
Liz and Navarro don’t look eye-to-eye, but they don’t have to. Liz approaches the case practically, while Navarro, somewhere, believes that the supernatural is at play too.
At the end of the day, the two don’t want to let go of their individual cases, which makes them a threat to whoever is behind the Tsalal men’s and Annie’s deaths.
