In Let’s Get Divorced, when Yui is dissatisfied with her marriage, she meets Kyoji, a strange man who catches her interest. Ryo Nishikido plays Kano Kyoji.
One day, Yui runs into a man named Kyoji. The man then waits for her at the same spot the next day, hoping to meet her again. He had a good day at the arcade after running into Yui, and that is why he waits for her.
It turns out that he loves Pachinko and frequents the arcade to play the game. Even though Yui has to leave for Ehime, she chooses to accompany him to the arcade, and he takes her out to dinner after winning again.
The dinner turns into a date, and later, the two of them walk together holding hands. After that day, Yui goes back to the arcade to meet him again. With time, Yui and Kyoji start liking each other, and Yui becomes convinced to divorce Taishi.
A strange man who is both alive and dead
To Yui, Kyoji seems different from anyone she has ever met because he looks both alive and dead. Furthermore, he does not know who she is. He treats her like a common person and continues to do so even when he finds out that she is a celebrity.
Kyoji is an artist who makes abstract paintings and sculptures. He even gifts a sculpture to Yui and wins her heart by asking her to give him all her free time in return. As he is not employed, he spends all his time in the arcade or his studio.
When Yui goes to Ehime to support Taishi and to shoot Mikochan, Kyoji also moves to Ehime for her, but without telling her. There, he gets to meet Taishi, who gets impressed by him, as he thinks that Kyoji is a free spirit who lives his life the way he wants.
Kyoji’s heartbreak
Kyoji is impotent, and he tells Yui that she does not need to get divorced. He believes that they can be together regardless of her marital status. In fact, when he finds out that she is pregnant with Taishi’s child, he immediately tells her that he will raise this child with her as his own.
However, Yui does not want that. She realizes that Kyoji is not a strange man as she had believed him to be; he is just a regular man who wants regular things in life. She then breaks up with him, and the breakup hurts him a lot.
As Yui and Taishi had publicly announced that they will not get divorced if Taishi wins the elections, Kyoji makes up his mind to support Taishi and make him win. He tries his best to change Taishi’s public image.
The elections leave a strong impact on him, and due to that, Kyoji becomes a blogger who covers elections. He then helps Taishi expose Soda’s corrupt deals and promises to write a good piece about Taishi when he runs for Congress.
At the end of the day, he is satisfied to know that Yui and her baby are happy and well because it tells him that he never truly had a place in her life.
