Kim Se-ra, Suk-min’s wife, fears her husband so much that she never dares to challenge him. In My Demon, Jo Yeon-hee plays Se-ra.
Se-ra is a beautiful and elegant woman, but neither Madam Ju nor her husband appreciates her. As a result, she continuously seeks their approval.
On the surface, Se-ra seems to lead a comfortable and happy life; her husband is the heir to the Mirae Group, and she enjoys a life filled with luxuries. However, the reality is quite different.
Se-ra’s silence
Suk-min is an abusive father. He hurts his and Se-ra’s only son, Do-gyeong, even for the slightest of mistakes.
Do-gyeong has to endure living under the same roof as his father, living in constant fear. As a result, he suffers from intermittent explosive disorder, extreme anxiety, and depression.
Se-ra is aware of it, yet she does nothing to protect him from Suk-min. She fears her husband too much to stand up to him.
Whenever Suk-min abuses Do-gyeong, Se-ra tries to find her peace of mind and block out his screams. She pretends not to know about the abuse or that her husband is a murderer.
However, she does know everything, but she convinces herself that Do-gyeong is getting punished because he deserves it.
Even when Suk-min forces Do-gyeong to take the fall for his crimes, Se-ra does not protest, as she does not wish to make her husband angry.
The impact of Do-gyeong’s death
When she visits her son in prison, Do-gyeong holds her accountable for turning a blind eye to his abuse at his father’s hands.
He points out that, while he always tried to keep her safe, she never did the same for him. Despite this, Se-ra continues to avoid responsibility and tells him that he deserved to be punished.
He informs his mother that now that he is in prison, his father will take out his anger on her.
Shortly after meeting his mother and being blamed for the abuse he endured, Do-gyeong takes his own life. His death devastates Se-ra.
She realizes that Do-gyeong was right; she was safe as long as he was there to take the brunt of Suk-min’s anger.
Now, Suk-min blames her for not raising Do-gyeong well and abuses her, even though all she has ever done is try to be a good wife.
The fact that Suk-min can continue living his life without regretting what he did to their son infuriates Se-ra.
It is hinted that Se-ra, who has never opposed her husband, might finally go against Suk-min and bring his crimes to light.
