Kim Jin-Ju: Doona character explained

Kim Jin-Ju is one of the major supporting characters in the bittersweet Kdrama, Doona! The character is played by Ha Young.

Doona! focuses on two unlikely love birds navigating difficult paths, developments, and interferences in their romantic journey. One major equation preventing their love from blooming properly early on is Kim Jin-Ju.

Unlucky crush

Kim Jin-Ju was Lee Won-Jun’s high school crush. What’s not revealed until later in Doona! is that she had just as big a crush on him too.

It was Won-Jun who confessed his feelings first, and even though she was over the moon about it, she couldn’t immediately reciprocate the love.

It was because she had an abusive father who kept a leash on his daughters and prevented them, with force, from going out and mingling with boys in any capacity.

She couldn’t gather the courage to share this with Won-Jun. Meanwhile, he took this delay as a sign that she was not into him the same way he was into her. More misunderstanding later, he moves on and the distance between the two grows.

Independent rebel

Years later, Kim Jin-Ju runs into Lee Won-Jun during his second year at the college. They keep running into each other and find themselves working at the same restaurant.

Jin-Ju is shown to be a fierce, independent, and glowing individual who has been grinding hard to make ends meet while paying for her college tuition.

A major decision that she makes regarding the family is heart-touching and inspiring. She is done away with her abusive father. He tries to call her back but she severs her ties with him.

After getting rejected by Won-Jun, she heads off to stick to her education. After graduation, she goes to the USA and Brazil and seems to truly love this new phase of her.
