In The Good Bad Mother, Kang-ho and Mi-joo are childhood sweethearts who had to separate because Kang-ho’s life took him in a dangerous direction. Years later, Mi-joo finds out the reason behind their breakup.
Kang-ho and Mi-joo are born under the same roof, just a few minutes apart. As their mothers are close friends, the two of them grow up together and are there to witness every significant phase of each other’s livesf.
It does not take long for them to start dating, but their relationship does not last long, as Kang-ho fails to appear for an important exam because Mi-joo gets into an accident.
Kang-ho does not hold Mi-joo responsible for what happened, but his mother, who wants nothing more than to see Kang-ho become a prosecutor, does, so she refuses to give Mi-joo Kang-ho’s contact information when he moves to Seoul.
Despite her efforts to keep them apart, as fate would have it, the two of them run into each other in Seoul, and their love story begins once again.
The one that got away
When Mi-joo reunites with Kang-ho in Seoul and finds out that he is managing his studies as well as his part-time job at the same time, she asks him to quit his job and move in with her.
She works hard to provide for both of them. On top of that, she cooks, cleans, and takes care of Kang-ho, allowing him to focus on passing the bar exam and nothing else.
The two of them are very much in love and happy together, but nobody knows about their relationship back home. Eventually, their efforts bear fruit, and Kang-ho passes the bar exam.
This is also the time when Kang-ho discovers the truth about his father’s murder and starts growing distant from Mi-joo. The day he gets appointed as a prosecutor, Kang-ho breaks up with Mi-joo, telling her that there is something that he needs to do on his own.
He does not tell her that he is going to take Assemblymen Oh and Chairman Song down and that he is breaking up with her to keep her safe. Similarly, Mi-joo does not tell him that she is pregnant with his twins.
Mi-joo then sees him with Ha-young, which breaks her heart. Kang-ho also suffers from heartbreak when he sees Mi-joo with her friend’s boyfriend and her twins, which makes him think that she has moved on and had children with another man.
Kang-ho does not want her to find out why he left her, as he wants her to resent him and forget him. Mi-joo eventually returns to the village and meets Kang-ho, who does not remember anything from his past but still has feelings for Mi-joo.
When Young-soon finds out that Mi-joo is the woman who made Kang-ho happy and is mentioned in Kang-ho’s files, she tells Mi-joo why Kang-ho broke up with her. At the same time, Kang-ho regains his memories.
He finally recognizes his children but does not tell them that he is their father just yet. He also apologizes to Mi-joo, who cannot find it in herself to be angry with him after knowing that he was suffering more than her when they broke up.
He does not want Mi-joo to forgive him before he finds a way to bring Assemblymen Oh and Chairman Song’s crimes to light. However, just like how it has always been, Mi-joo decides to stand by his side and help him, even if that means putting herself in danger.
