Joo Mi-ran is a mysterious cafe owner whose past is linked with Du-sik’s past. Kim Bo-ra plays Mi-ran in Like Flowers in Sand.
Mi-ran runs a cafe called Ran’s Coffe in Geosan. Even in her childhood, her dream was to own a cafe.
No one in town knows much about Mi-ran or why she moved to the countryside. She does not share anything about her life with the people of Geosan.
One night, she hears a drunk Baek-du calling out Du-sik’s name. Since that day, she keeps trying to find out more about Du-sik and her past from the townspeople.
Mi-ran comes across as a nosy outsider, and no one finds out that she is only pretending to not know Du-sik.
The girl who was forgotten
It does not take Mi-ran long to figure out that Yu-gyeong is Du-sik and that Hyeon-uk and Du-sik are undercover police officers.
She repeatedly brings up Du-sik to Hyeon-uk, aiming to make him aware that his colleague is concealing her true identity. This prompts Hyeon-uk to delve into Du-sik’s past.
When Du-sik comes to know about this, she investigates Mi-ran. It turns out that Mi-ran is the daughter of Joo Cheol-yong, the wrestler who was murdered 20 years ago.
Du-sik’s father, who was Joo Cheol-yong’s coach, was accused of murdering him. After Joo Cheol-yong’s death, Mi-ran and Du-sik’s family left Geosan.
Mi-ran used to be friends with Du-sik, Baek-du, and the other children, but when she returns to Geosan years later, no one recognizes her.
Mi-ran’s association with Choi Chil-seong
Du-sik comes to Geosan to investigate the death of Choi Chil-seong, a match-fixer the police pursued for years.
Baek-du ran into Choi Chil-seong before he died, but as Baek-du was drunk, he does not remember meeting Choi Chil-seong.
When Baek-du is taken to the police station for questioning, it is Mi-ran who tells the police what happened between Baek-du and Choi Chil-seong that night.
She claims that she saw the interaction from her balcony, but when Baek-du remembers the events of that night, it is revealed that she knew everything because she was with Choi Chil-seong in his car.
Du-sik suspects that Choi Chil-seong had something to do with Mi-ran’s father’s death. Choi Chil-seong had come to Geosan to meet Mi-ran’s father before he died.
Two decades later, Choi Chil-seong returned to the town, but this time, his visit was to meet Mi-ran. Du-sik realizes this the moment she discovers Mi-ran’s identity.
Determined to uncover the truth about her father and Mi-ran’s father’s past, Du-sik wants Mi-ran to tell her everything that she knows, and Mi-ran agrees to talk to her.
She tells Du-sik that Choi Chil-seong came to meet her because he blamed himself for her father’s death. He wanted to give Mi-ran a lot of money, which Mi-ran hands over to Du-sik.
Mi-ran does not know a lot about Choi Chil-seong’s death, but she’s helping Du-sik because she also wants the person who killed her father to be punished.
