How does John escape the prison in Luther: The Fallen Sun?

David Robey has John sent to prison after exposing his less-than-legal ways of carrying out investigations and John eventually finds a way to get out.

When a dossier filled with all of John Luther’s indiscretions lands on the doorstep of the authorities and is leaked to the media, he is immediately relieved of his duties and sent to prison.

He accepts his fate initially but when David Robey sends him a taunting message with a recording of Callum Aldritch’s screams. John contacts DCI Odette Raine to help with the case.

After she tells him to stand down, John decides that he must catch David on his own. He just manages to set his plan in motion before his only source of contacting the outside is taken from him.

A distracting riot

John contacts Dennis McCabe, a criminal contact of his on the outside. Dennis says he’s just a thief and doesn’t trust John enough to do what he’s asking for but John manages to change his mind.

He tells Dennis that he knows he went through a traumatic event when he was a child and compares that incident to what David Robey is doing now as he has kidnapped and killed kids.

Once Dennis is convinced, John meets with two prison guards who are sympathetic to his plight. He tells them that they need to let the other prisoners attack him so that they’re forced to transfer him, to which they reluctantly agree.

Later that night, an inmate is seen trying to hang himself in his cell on the security feed. It’s actually a distraction and the first two guards at the scene are the ones John spoke to. They pretend to be subdued by the inmate and let him get out.

That inmate opens the cells of the others and starts a whole riot as they make their way to John’s cell. John does his best to fight back and makes his way down to the main hall where the armed guards arrive.

That night, John is put on a transport van to be taken to another location. Along the way, the van is intercepted by armed individuals who threaten the guards and break John out.
