Joel and Mei began dating in season 3 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel but it appears as though the couple has reached their end.
Joel and Mei meet each other for the first time soon after Joel opens the Button Club as his Chinese landlords ask Mei to be their translator. Mei is actually their daughter and she lets him know that they’re not happy with the crowd and attention he’s drawing.
They continue to run into each other and eventually begin a relationship. Joel tries to keep it a secret from his parents but Midge does eventually learn about the relationship and she keeps the secret for him.
Mei is learning to become a doctor but her plans are derailed when she becomes pregnant with Joel’s child. Joel chooses to be by Mei’s side but when he tells Moishe, his father has a heart attack and is hospitalized.
After his recovery, Moishe tells Joel that Mei needs to convert to Judaism before he tells his mother. Joel ponders how he’s going to tell his mother the truth, while Midge has a conversation with Mei about motherhood.
Strong independent woman
On Thanksgiving Day, Joel finally confesses to the rest of the family about his relationship with Mei after Moishe pushes him to do it. He tells them that she’s pregnant and that they plan on getting married.
When her returns home that day, he finds Mei waiting for him. She tells him that she will be moving to Chicago for her residency which means they cannot be together.
She also tells him that there is no baby either, alluding to the fact that she got an abortion. Joel doesn’t take the news in the best manner as he didn’t get a say in the matter so he gets incredibly drunk.
He makes a scene at the Button Club and then heads down to the casino where he accuses Mei’s parents of sending her away. He gets a beating for his troubles and is dropped off at Moishe and Shirley’s house by Archie.
Midge finds out about Mei but when Shirley keeps asking, she tells her that Mei is stuck in China because of the revolution. When Moishe offers to “extract” her from there, he tells them the truth about their split.
