Jo Yong-Pil is one of the lead protagonists in the romantic comedy series, Welcome to Samdal-ri. The character is played by Ji Chang-Wook.
Jo Yong-Pil is an adored citizen of Jeju Island, always ready and willing to help out others, so much so that he chooses a job to specifically be able to help protect the elderly in his hometown.
He is also the love interest of the titular protagonist and remains one of her strongest supporters and friends through all the different stages of their lives spent together and apart.
Humble dreams
Jo Yong-Pil, unlike his best friend since childhood, and eventual girlfriend before the breakup, Jo Sam-Dal, was always attached to his hometown the most.
If Jeju Island was a small stream, then Sam-Dal was a dragon who wanted to fly away to great success. However, Yong-Pil always wanted to remain in his hometown.
As an adult, he works at the Meteorological Administration, forecasting weather and forewarning all the elderly on Jeju Island about the weather patterns and changes.
He keeps getting invited to go work for the headquarters in Seoul, but he can’t move to that place for more than the aforementioned reason, the primary being Jo Sam-Dal, who lives in Seoul which is why he’d have to run into her.
Shattered heart
The two used to be inseparable, the best of friends since their childhood and then eventual lovers. However, something occurred that drove a wedge between them and they broke up with each other after that.
This left both of them broken, and Sam-Dal went on to focus on her career and garnered success. She also got into another relationship, but Jo Yong-Pil could never move on from her.
When she returns, Yong-Pil keeps stumbling upon her and the two keep finding each other spending time together, even though there’s an abundance of pain between them.
