At a lavish gathering in the Governor’s mansion, Diego encounters Ferdinand and Irina Ivanova for the first time.
They are formally introduced by Tadeo Marquez, who is deeply involved in collaborative efforts with the Russians.
Lucia Marquez harbors a simmering resentment towards Irina, stemming from her knowledge of Tadeo’s extramarital affair with the foreign envoy.
While Lucia seems to tolerate her husband’s infidelity, an underlying tension pervades her interactions with Irina.
The plot thickens during a dinner at the Marquez residence, where Lucia clandestinely attempts to poison Governor Pedro.
However, her plan is thwarted by Irina, who intervenes just in time. Irina cautions Lucia, advising patience and implying that certain dilemmas resolve themselves over time.
A power grab
Diego sabotages Pedro’s plan to hand over Ramirez’s property to the Russians for a personal commission, and they are not too pleased with this.
When Pedro insists on being paid despite not delivering on his promise, Irina suggests tolerating his greed for future gains or taking him off the board completely.
Her calculating mind is seen as a threat and Ferdinand warns her not to overstep her bounds.
He does take her advice and invites Pedro under the pretense of paying him. The reality is that he sets a trap and plans to kill Pedro.
Irina thinks two steps ahead and attacks Ferdinand after he kills Pedro but keeps him alive.
She tells him that he will still report back to the Crown, but she will be the one pulling the strings.
The Governor’s death is blamed on Zorro, but Diego confronts Irina about that. He tells her that if she doesn’t want to be exposed, she must give back the natives their jobs on the port and treat them fairly.
When Lucia is arrested, Irina visits Tadeo to rekindle their affair. However, he is found the next morning with his throat slit in an apparent suicide.
Irina orders her men to help Lucia escape during her transport and offers a partnership between the Russians and the Clan of the Bear to gain influence in California.
