Infamy (2023) follows Gita, a Romani girl with a passion for music who has to break cultural tradition to follow her dreams. The series is streaming on Netflix.

Plot summary:
Gita lives in Wales with her parents and younger siblings. She comes from a Romani family and one day her parents tell her that they’re moving back to Poland.
Gita isn’t happy about this but reluctantly moves back with them. Her mother, Viola, urges her to follow Romanipen or traditional Romani customs and to ease their transition.
They move back with her uncle Stefan who runs the family business. The reason they moved back is because her father, Marko, is a gambling addict who had debts that Stefan paid off.
Marko agreed to marry off Gita to Stefan’s business partner’s son to pay off his debts. Josep and his son Janko are Romani from the Czech Republic and Josef is a drug trafficker.
Gita doesn’t want to marry Janko even though her whole family pushes her to do it. Gita has a passion for music and develops a friendship with Tagar, a young man who works for Stefan. He is also a talented recording engineer and they record a song together.
Tagar owns a dog that he uses in an illegal dog fighting ring, but one day the dog bites a Polish woman who is pregnant. The police and regular Poles look for him to get revenge and he has to go into hiding.
Gita joins the local school and makes some new friends but hides the fact that she is Romani because she is afraid that they will shun her if they know.
They do ultimately find out and treat her exactly how she was afraid they would, except for Eliza who doesn’t say anything even though she already knew that Gita was Romani.
Marko struggles to keep his addiction at bay and gambles off the money that Viola had kept hidden for Gita’s wedding to Janko. Janko tries his best to win over Gita but she isn’t interested one bit.
She helps Tagar hide from the Poles in a trailer in the middle of nowhere and regularly visits him. However, every time she tries to get close to him, he pushes back.
That is because Tagar is married and has a child on the way but he doesn’t tell Gita. Gita sleeps with Tagar to besmirch her honor and get out of marrying Janko but Marko finds them and punches Tagar in the face.
When she says that she wants to marry him, he says he can’t. Gita is devastated by this and tries to commit suicide. She ends up in the hospital and her friends return to apologize and see if she’s okay.
Gita finds out that Tagar is married and tells him that she doesn’t want to see him again. He sends her the completed sample of her song but she shuts him out completely.
She and her friends hold a ritual to lay a curse on Tagar. That night, in exchange for entry at a casino, Marko tells some Poles where Tagar is hiding.
They go there to intimidate him but end up killing him. Gita finds out and shaves her head in mourning, much to the disgust of her family. Her parents stand
Tagar’s death grabs a lot of attention and the hatred toward Romani people makes the news as people protest the open racism shown by the Poles.

Who killed Tagar?
Eliza’s college boyfriend was the one who sent out the order to hurt Tagar, but the men who went there lost control and took things too far. He asks Eliza to cover for her and when she pushes back, he threatens to expose a sex tape he made with her.
She gets evidence of his involvement from his laptop and then turns the situation around by telling him that the video he took is incriminating since she was a minor at the time and he wasn’t.
She posts the evidence of his racism online and eventually he and the other guys involved are arrested by the police.
What happens to the family business?
Stefan is worried because they will go broke if the deal with Josef doesn’t go through. Marko offers to go and explain the situation to Josef and take whatever punishment he wants to dole out.
Josef threatens to shoot Marko in the head while Gita herself shows Janko that she saved her head and cannot marry him but he is head over heels for her and insists that it isn’t a problem.
Josef is still angry but cannot do anything about his son’s conviction. He is also impressed with Marko’s bravery and makes a deal with him. Marko manages to keep the business deal intact, and in the case of Gita and Janko, agrees that it will go through only if Janko can win over her.
What does Gita do?
Gita tells her friends that she has a big plan that she needs their help with. She wants to shoot a music video for the song she made with Tagar in his honor.
They agree to help her and arrange everything but Gita realizes that if she posts this, her family will cut her off forever and there will be no going back. Her friends comfort her and say that they will be by her side no matter what.
She posts the video and it is a huge success, but predictably, her family decides to shun her. Her parents decide to move out even though the family offers to let them stay if they agree to cut her off too.
Thy decide that Gita is more important and move somewhere where they can live on their own without pressure and meet Gita whenever they want. She is free now to live out her dream of being a rapper and an independent woman.
