Gu Il-Hoon plays a major supporting role in the story of King the Land, serving as an important figure in Gu Won’s life and being the owner of the King group.
Gu Won has lived a life of privilege that only a microscopic fraction of people get to live. All the bells and whistles of living large here are thanks to his father Gu Il-Hoon, and the immense wealth that his King Group of industries and businesses proffers.
While a figure mostly occupied with the proper functioning of his businesses, Il-Hoon is also worried about his successor and the group’s continued success.
Fiercely competitive
Gu Il-Hoon is shown to be a highly competitive person, which comes as no surprise considering he’s in a business that’s rife with competition.
The ambers of his competitive spirit are revealed when he meets with his friends who run the Royal Hotel group. They are also in the hospitality business and in one of the areas, their VVIP department has taken a lead on King Hotel.
They gloat about this while Il-Hoon takes it to heart. Later, he addresses it at dinner with his son and daughter, ordering them to see to it that no one surpasses them and their success, whether it be permanent or momentary
A lacking father
Gu Il-Hoon is mainly consumed by the worries and concerns that pertain to the business. The growth of the company and the King Group is dependent on the behavior and treatment of others by the people in question.
Amid all the activities related to the functioning of the group as well as its success, Il-Hoon hasn’t been the best of fathers. He wishes for his successor to be one of the two children he has, pitting Gu Won and Hwa-Ran for a battle that will see the victor taking the reigns.
He has also been a father intentionally secretive to Gu Won, not delving into details about his mother and holding many aspects related to his mother a secret.
