Grace is one of Jimmy’s patients who faces his new approach to treatment leading to disastrous effects. Heidi Gardner plays the character.
When Jimmy decides to take the more direct approach to therapy, Paul and Gaby advise against it but he goes through with it anyway and one of his patients to experience it is Grace.
She visits Jimmy to talk about her abusive relationship with her boyfriend Donny and despite multiple sessions, Jimmy doesn’t seem to make progress with her so he finally snaps and tells her to leave him because he’s not healthy for her.
Grace goes through an entire journey with ups and downs before reaching a place of comfort toward the end of the season.
Progressive strides
Jimmy’s advice seems to be beneficial to Grace initially as he has video sessions with her where she talks about how well she’s been doing since she left Donny. However, Donny does walk up to Jimmy at a soccer game and punch him in the face for his role in his breakup.
Things seem to be good until Jimmy sees Grace hiking with Donny on their usual route one day. He tries contacting her but to no avail and he sets up a fake appointment with her so that he can ask for another chance, this time to do things the right way.
He helps her work through her issues and one of the things he encourages her to do is disrupt his behavior. Standing up to him in little ways like spilling his coffee if he doesn’t like it as a little “boop”.
Grace says that “booping” has worked immensely and she’s in a much better place for which she thanks Jimmy. While she’s ranting about him, she jokes that he’s lucky they’re not on a cliff because she would just boop him over the edge and Jimmy plays along with the joke.
Later on, when Grace and Donny are out for a hike, Donny ends up pushing all of Grace’s buttons by just being himself and Grace decides to act on her fantasy. When he’s marveling at the view, she pushes him over the edge of the cliff and appears to have a huge weight lifted.
