Gong Ji-Chan is a major supporting character in the romantic comedy Kdrama, Welcome to Samdal-ri. The character is played by Kim Min-Cheol.
Gong Ji-Chan is a 29-year-old CEO of the Dolphin Center. It is the Jeju southern bottlenose dolphin protection group.
He is also a rather eccentric individual whose obsession with the dolphins is amusing, to say the least, but he cares least about what others think about it.
The Dolphin Dad
Ji-Chan is a fanatic about dolphins and cares deeply, intensely, and almost religiously for them.
It all started when he was 21 years old, and he met Namchun, a bottlenose dolphin at an aquarium in Jeju.
This aquarium housed illegally captured and trapped bottlenose dolphins. Ji-Chan made it his mission to return the fish to the Jeju Sea.
Today, he observes them from the shore, with his binoculars, with the same devotion to their protection that made him want to do it in the first place.
A perfect match
Gong Ji-Chan is very similar to Sam-Dal’s younger sister, Cho Hae-Dal. There is more than one similarity that they both share, a fact that the show keeps highlighting to set up their inevitable romance.
Both are twenty-nine years of age and have spent their entire twenties taking care of someone else. Cho Hae-Dal sacrificed her youth to raise and take care of her now nine-year-old daughter Cha Ha-Yul.
Ji-Chan, on the other hand, has sacrificed his youth to look after the dolphins and continue to protect them.
One day, he meets the nine-year-old smart girl Cha Ha-Yul, and soon, her mother Cho Hae-Dal, and as they interact, the daughter realizes how well the two adults gel with each other.
