Gil Joong-Gan’s love triangle in Strong Girl Nam-Soon explained

Gil Joong-Gan is the superpowered grandmother of the titular protagonist of Kdrama, Strong Girl Nam-Soon. The recent turn of events sees her contending with the conflict of a love triangle.

Gil Joong-Gan, like all the women in her family since olden times, sports a superhuman strength that terrifies the regular folk.

Apart from the strength, she has all the lavish comforts that money can buy, thanks to her superpowered daughter who made it big with her businesses.

However, Gil Joong-Gan suffers from certain loneliness when it comes to her love life, which is remedied when a handsome barista walks into her life. Bliss is short-lived, as her presumed dead husband returns.

The absent husband

Gil Jang-Goon pretty much considers her husband dead at the beginning of the story, as he’s been out of the country for over ten years.

He went on a journey to find himself — a spiritual one, in the mountains. In doing so, he severed communications with his family and by the looks and sounds of it, he completely abandoned them.

After years of his absence and no information about his whereabouts, he returns to Korea, all jubilant and cheerful, trying to dive back into his old life and place in the family as if nothing changed.

His spiritual journey also seems like an unserious endeavor by the way his account of the self-searching journey is played for laughs and he’s made out to look like a bit of a character.

Falling for Jun-Hee

During his absence, Gil Joong-Gan felt loneliness and even though she is old, she has needs and wants that aren’t just physical.

She craves company and romance, and she finds them in the handsome hunk of a barista who works for her son, Seo Jun-Hee.

Joong-Gan falls head over heels for him and she’s spellbound at the very first sight. She swoons over him and begins her flirtatious banter right away.

Gradually, as she helps him with his issues and takes him out, Jun-Hee falls for her too. The two begin their romantic affair and soon they become a pretty serious couple, until Joong-Gan’s husband returns.

Husband returns

Her husband’s return enrages Gil Joong-Gan, who is even more exasperated when he tries to pretend and act like nothing too dramatic happened and says he’s ready to be her husband once again.

This anger leads to Joong-Gan subjecting him to a little throw at the airport, leaving him with several serious injuries. He currently lies in a hospital bed, wailing from the pain of his physical predicament.

Meanwhile, Joong-Gan is hurt too, but her injuries are of the heart. She is suffering from the chaos of a conflict as her responsibilities as a wife and a family member remain.

She also fears that her relationship with Jun-Hee won’t be accepted. However, Jun-Hee is optimistic and promises her that he will sort it all out by talking to her husband once he’s recovered.
