The Gentleman Ghost is one of the many villains Batman encounters in Gotham. Toby Stephens voices the character.
A man on horseback is involved in a spate of robberies around Gotham and people believe that a ghost is responsible and he is dubbed the Gentleman Ghost.
Bruce Wayne is a skeptic and is certain that it is just someone under a mask with many bells and whistles.
Alfred Pennyworth believes in ghosts and asks Bruce to be more open to the idea that this case could be supernatural.
While looking into the robberies, Batman notices a pattern in the targets of the ghost and goes out in search of his next sighting.
A greedy nobleman
The Gentleman Ghost shows up on a train where Harvey Dent is speaking with reporters to win over the public.
The ghost only steals from the common people and leaves Harvey alone because he’s wealthy.
Batman gives chase but is unable to catch him. He observes the crest that the ghost sports and goes to the library to learn more.
He discovers that the crest belongs to the Craddock family, but it was struck from the record after James “Gentleman” Jim Craddock ruined his family name.
James was a wealthy aristocrat who gambled away his fortune and then began stealing from the poor because he believed it was his right to be rich.
He was eventually hung for his crimes.
Alternative methods
Bruce remembers that Lucius Fox planned to buy the Craddock family estate, Heritage Hill, from Russell Craddock and rushes over there.
He comes face to face with the ghost and confirms that he’s facing the ghost of James Craddock trying to protect his land.
Batman finally listens to Alfred and meets Linton Midnite, a man familiar with the supernatural.
Linton tells him that to banish the Gentleman Ghost, he must burn the deed to Heritage Hill, and add the blood of a nobleman.
He secures the deed from the archives and heads to the cemetery after Alfred reveals that he’s the descendant of a nobleman.
They perform the ritual at the cemetery and face off against James Craddock one final time as the ghost attempts to stop them.
Alfred is almost lost, but Batman ultimately triumphs. Craddock’s soul is sealed inside a vial that Linton had given, and it is handed over to Linton as payment for his services.
