Freddy Horniman is a major character in the thriller-comedy series, The Gentleman. Daniel Ings plays the character in the show, now available to stream on Netflix.
Freddy Horniman is the firstborn son of the Twelfth Duke of Halstead, Archibald Horatio Landrover Horniman.
Despite his birthright to have it, he’s deprived of his primogeniture when his father dies and leaves behind a will entailing the handover of the estate and most other assets to Freddy’s younger brother, Eddie.
Freddy’s debts
Freddy throws a fit with all his coke-addled vigor. There’s a major reason, besides the fact that he’s robbed of his “right” as per tradition, which lends to his uber-dramatic outrage.
The reason is his debt, a massive one, which he owes to Tommy Dixon, a Liverpudlian chop dealer who is part of a Scouse family of cocaine dealers.
He tells Eddie about his £8 million debt that he now can’t pay off. Eddie decides to help him, and the helpers present themselves to him really soon, in the form of a crime organization that runs a cannabis empire
One of their many farms on many aristocratic estates happens to be running beneath the Halstead estate.
Susie Glass, the streetwise day-to-day business-handling daughter of the Glass empire’s head, Bobby Glass, helps out with Freddy’s debts.
Tommy Dixon is well aware of Susie Glass and the power she hails from and so he decides to forget about the compound interest.
However, apart from the £4 million debt and £1 million worth of marijuana from Glass, he needs an apology and a humiliating video of Freddy dancing, while dressed as a chicken.
Freddy makes things worse
Tommy humiliates Freddy a lot, who can feel the stabs at his dignity even as he’s high on cocaine.
When he can’t tolerate it anymore, Freddy takes a gun and paints the wall and painting behind Tommy with his blood splatter.
Tommy’s utmost vicious brother, John “the Gospel” Dixon comes knocking when he smells something suspicious. However, Eddie helps Freddy out again and he’s safe from trouble for the time being.
Freddy has a hard time learning his lessons, all while he keeps making mistakes like it’s second nature to him.
He decides to help Eddie out during a robbery from a ruthless gangster and ends up getting caught himself.
He also steals the pile of cash that Eddie pulls out of their dad’s vault, to pay Freddy’s debt, and bets it all on a boxing match.
The firstborn keeps making mistakes that prove to be a lot of trouble for his brother and other people.
A man of errors
He crosses the line when his frustrations with himself make him want his own brother dead.
He tries to pitch to Susie Glass a new venture and partnership in the likely case his brother gets out of the way and he inherits the estate.
He apologizes for it later to Eddie but it’s not enough, because he keeps erring and causing a heap of troubles for his loved ones.
Right up until the end, Fredward Horniman keeps messing about, with the latest of his brainchild being a ludicrous plan involving the production of crack weed or weed crack, which he thinks is going to be revolutionary.
