Frank Florez is a person from Regus Patoff’s past who reveals the truth behind the strange man in The Consultant.
The last thing Milani tells Craig before she runs off is that he should find a “Frank Florez” because he can tell Craig what Regus “is truly made of”. Little would Craig know that the statement she makes would be quite literal.
The character is played by veteran actor Juan Carlos Cantu.
Ill-gotten knowledge
When Craig has a moment with Regus’s phone to add in the demo for “upskirt jungle’, he gets the idea to add in a stalker ware as well so that he can acquire any information he needs.
He later tells Elaine that he got a contact for Frank Florez from the phone but hasn’t contacted him yet. He asks Elaine to call and find out as much as she can first. She learns that Frank Florez is a jeweler with a small store in Pomona which is quite a journey from where they are.
Craig decides to go there on his own and calls Regus that morning faking an illness to get out of work. Regus assumes it’s a terrible illness and shares this news with the rest of the staff, making it seem like he’s on death’s door.
A jeweler’s secrets
Craig walks into an empty store and is greeted by an elderly man who introduces himself as Frank Florez. However, as soon as he mentions the name “Regus Patoff”, Frank presses a button that locks down the store.
He’s initially terrified that Regus sent Craig but when Craig reveals that he works for Regus and has seen him in the flesh, Frank asks him what he looks like and how much he weighs.
He also reveals that “Regus Patoff” is derived from the shortened forms of the words “registered at the United States patent office” and is a fake name.
He takes Craig to his workshop in the back and explains how there was a hospital nearby and one day a doctor arrived and asked him to craft a tiny bone with very specific measurements out of gold.
Over three years, several doctors visited Frank with different requests, and each time the payment was hefty and in the name of Regus Patoff. Frank gradually realized that he was being asked to make an entire gold skeleton, which was worth up to 25 million dollars.
Frank reveals that once he completed the requests, everything started to disappear around him. His business dried up, the people in the neighborhood moved away, and eventually, his wife disappeared too.
He tells Craig to be wary of Patoff but as Craig is leaving, three men in animal masks attack him and start destroying the store. Frank shoots them with a shotgun and then picks up a dazed Craig and tells him to get out of there because Regus must know where he is.
Craig makes a break for it but a few days later, Elaine says that there was nothing about a break-in or attack in the news, leaving Frank’s fate up in the air.
