At Carol’s retirement party, Kate and Johnny reminisce about a kiss they had at KPOC twenty years ago, one which acted as a pivotal turning point in their time as two estranged lovers still vying for each other. Meanwhile, Tully gives Dan some advice on spontaneity regarding his love life with Celeste.

As Kate and Theo’s marriage approaches fast in the past, Johnny dares and another awkward confrontation between the two sees him and Kate have sex, following which Johnny takes a shower and Theo arrives, mistaking the man to be his bride-to-be, resulting in an accident that leaves him with one ball and apart from Kate.

Johnny soon surprises Kate and proposes to marry, and she says yes. Firefly Lane season 2 part 2 ending explained in detail:

How does Kate die?

In the 2000’s, Kate and Tully’s lifelong friendship suffers from their biggest setbacks when Tully’s errors land Marah into the hospital. Kate breaks things off with Tully and in spite of the latter’s efforts, refuses to forgive and forget.

Tully decides to focus on her career to distract herself from the loneliness, and leaves for Antarctica for a documentary. Kate tries to fill the gap left by Tully with a new friend but soon realizes it can’t be filled by anyone else. However, her biggest test arrives when she gets diagnosed with breast cancer.

It’s an aggresive form of cancer too, and finding herself in need of a true friend, Kate tries calling Tully, who is out of reach. When her phone finally register some network bars, she looks at the voicemails and comes rushing to Kate, who’s now hairless and frail due to her condition.

They resume their friendship and Tully is there to support Kate through everything. Kate goes through chemotherapy and it’s a success, and everyone rejoices in the merry times that her supposed recovery brings with it.

However, things take a turn for worse when Kate, and eventually others, learn that her cancer has now spread through her bones and liver. This commences another round of string-pulling and phone-dialling on Tully’s part, who seeks some form of cutting-edge, experimental treatment for her friend.

However, Kate’s aggresive cancer is just too big a risk for even the experimental treatments to work, or so the doctors that Tully reached out to opine. Good news comes when Danny says he’s managed to get Kate in for an experimental treatment. However, their hopes are shattered shortly as Johnny breaks the devastating news — Kate’s cancer spreads to her brain.

This extremely dire state leaves her out of any treatment options and gives her but weeks, months at best, to spend the last of her days. Thankfully, she spends these days in the company of people she holds dearest to her heart, and makes peace with her passing, as well as finishing her novel.

What happens to Theo?

Theo and Kate’s relationship is on the upswing. He proposes to her and she says yes, which breaks Johnny’s heart, who keeps lingering here and there.

Their wedding approaches and they get occupied with the preparations and all, while Johnny loses the watch that Kate gifted him. When he expresses how sad he feels at losing the last remainder of hers, Kate consoles him with a kiss.

Later on, Johnny arrives at her door and tells her that he loves her. She’s upset and angry at him for telling her this when her wedding is so near and when he was the one to back out of marrying her in the first place. However, the mutual love that remains and the lust that has been building between the two for a while culminates in them having sex.

It’s an incredible experience, the sex, but also one that Kate immediately regrets as she blames herself for being promiscuous. As she goes outside to take a call, Johnny slips into the shower for the clean-up, right when Theo arrives and mistaking Johnny to be Kate, goes to get frisky with her.

What he awaits in the shower is a shock, a trip, and a fall. The accident leaves him with one less testicle, and as he’s wheeled away by the medical staff, he takes his ring off Kate’s fingers, calling off their marriage.

Johnny goes on to propose to Kate and they eventually get married, shortly before having Marah. Some time passes, and one day Kate stumbles upon Theo of all people. In an awkward exchange, she tries to catch up.

With a constantly passive-aggresive glare and tone, Theo reveals he’s still single and going about fine with his one remaining testicle. He storms off after congratulating Kate on her marriage with Johnny, obviously not meaning any of it.

Do Tully & Danny reunite?

Tully returns from Antarctica to a Danny who’s upset that she won’t hang out with him at all after returning, when it was he who kept her company during the fallout with Kate. Tully explains the reasons for it being Kate’s cancer and Danny immediately understands.

Meanwhile, he asks her an advice on his own relationship with his girlfriend Celeste, who he says wants things to progress in their relationship but he thinks he’s not ready. While Tully herself has feelings for him, she advises him to not take time and be more courageous, and he follows through with it, proposing to Celeste shortly thereafter.

However, his relationship with her suffers many hitches after that, and what appears to be a smooth-sailing ride at first, drags on with great friction and turmoil. Meanwhile, Celeste actually ends up kissing Tully during one of their chats, which shocks the latter, who is now even more conflicted about what she must do here.

At Kate and Johnny’s second wedding, Celeste confesses to Danny that she was only giving Danny ultimatums about taking things forward in their relationship because perhaps she wanted him to break up with her. As she walks off, Danny demands a clarification for the kiss from Tully, who’s busy hyperventilating about Kate’s remission.

Later on, Danny proposes again that they give their relationship a second shot and finish what they couldn’t twenty years ago. However, with Kate’s numbered days, Tully shuts her personal life and Danny off completely. He tries to reach out many times but she doesn’t respond.

Kate finally insists that she takes care of her personal life and reach out to Danny, when Tully actually does, but Danny informs her that he’s leaving for New York, clearly upset. However, Tully pulls through and makes a heartfelt confession, asking him to not go away, to stay with her.

Ten years after Kate’s passing, the two are shown to be happy and together.
