Plot summary:
John Allman is a rock star who is just coming off a very poor album. He is best known for his hit song, ‘Girl on the Beach’, but it has been a while since he had that kind of success.
To deal with his failure, John buys a house on a cliff in Cyprus. What he doesn’t realize is that the house overlooks a popular suicide spot.
He realizes after a man jumps off the cliff right in front of him he has to call the authorities.
The chief inspector, Manoli, tells him about the area and then wishes him luck at his new residence.
John goes to the village and asks the local grocer if he can have groceries delivered to his house up on the cliff.
She sends a girl named Melina, who recognizes John and asks him what he’s doing in the middle of nowhere.
He says that he’s taking a break from his career but she believes that music isn’t a career, it is a way of life.
Melina sings at a tavern and Manoli takes John there to experience Cyprus food and culture.
He also introduces John to some of the locals, including Dr. Athanasia. They already know each other, because John visited Cyprus many years ago.
‘Girl on the Beach’ was written about her, and they rekindled their romance after all those years.
She sneaks out of the house and tells her sister at church that John is back. John contacts her and invites her to dinner.
When Melina visits again, he agrees to tell her stories about his life, and in exchange, she will cook dinner for his date with Sia.
He plays her a new song called ‘Find Me Falling’ that he hasn’t finished yet. She asks him if she’s cooking for a date but he doesn’t reveal any details.
Sia’s sister tells her that reconnecting with John is a bad idea, but she goes anyway. She arrives early and is shocked to see her daughter, Melina, is there.
She leaves immediately with Melina and asks her sister why she would send Melina to that house. Her sister didn’t realize that John was the same one that Sia was talking about.
When Melina goes to John’s house the next morning, he asks her if Melina is his daughter and she says yes.
She says that she went to find him soon after she found out but she saw him with women all over him at one of his concerts and she decided not to tell him.
Melina doesn’t know any of this and asks her grandmother about it. She only learns about the romance but doesn’t discover that she is John’s daughter until later.
John gets drunk and goes to the tavern where Melina asks him to sing ‘Girl on the Beach’ with her.
He starts singing but then makes up the words, announcing to everyone that Melina is his daughter.
She storms off with Sia going after her to explain. While Melina and Sia don’t talk to each other, John avoids all of them and stays on the cliff.
Ending explained:
Talking things out
While he’s chilling at the house, he sees someone at the edge of the cliff and tries to talk them out of it.
The woman turns around and reveals that she is pregnant but her family doesn’t know about it.
He offers his house for the night and says that they can figure things out the next day. When he drives her to the village, he discovers that she is Manoli’s daughter.
While her mother takes her in, Manoli is enraged by his daughter’s actions so he stays with John until he cools down.
Melina continues to ignore her mother until her grandmother brings them both together at her house to fix things.
They embrace after Melina accepts that Sia is doing what she thought was best for her daughter.
Taking big steps
Manoli and John are having a drink with Manoli gets a call that his daughter Anna is going into labor.
They rush to the hospital in time for the birth and John runs into Sia there. He apologizes to her and then says that he’s going back to America for a big opportunity.
He finished writing ‘Find Me Falling’ and his producer loved it so he might be starting his career again.
The baby is born and their name is Yianni, which is ‘John’ in Greek. John is inspired to do something and he visits Melina to talk to her first.
Lost love
John apologizes for telling her so abruptly that he is her father and promises to do his best now that he knows.
He then asks for her help winning over her mother. He learns the words to a Greek romantic song and serenades Sia’s balcony with Melina’s help.
Sia watches him sing and then almost goes down to open the door but changes her mind. Melina apologizes and John hands her the words and sheet music for ‘Find Me Falling’.
She sings it at the tavern and then goes back home where her mother says that she doesn’t think John has changed.
Melina gives her the words of the song and tells her that he has. She reads them and then goes to John’s place to take the leap of faith.
John and Sia continue to live in Cyprus while Melina gets to start her music career with John’s song and his agent.
She has just as much talent as her father and is finally fulfilling her dreams.
