Plot summary

God has stopped caring about humans and answering their prayers. Since he has not been doing his job, the board of directors of Heaven decides to send God to Earth.

They randomly pick a prayer from a human named Abbie Higgins, who had not actually prayed but had instead made an offhanded remark about God saving her family.

God must now live with the Higgins family as a talking cat, connect with them, and make Abbie’s wish come true to prove to the board that he is empathetic.

God, known as Godcat in his cat form, meets the Higgins family, comprising Marv, Abbie, and their two children—Greta and Travis—who have all drifted apart because they have different interests.

Marv works at a supermarket and loves playing board games, while his wife, Abbie, an ex-navy officer, works at Animal Control and enjoys real-life action and adventure.

Greta conducts science experiments in her room and does not connect with others emotionally, while Travis spends all his time streaming, trying to go viral.

Godcat must bring the four of them together. He makes a good start by getting them to bond on one of their game nights, but he still has a long way to go.

Inspired by Heaven, the board of directors of Hell decides to send Beelzebub, the daughter of Satan and the CEO of Hell, to Earth as a talking cat, Devilcat.

Beelzebub has not been able to earn the respect that her father was given because she has failed to be as evil as him. She is sent to Earth to become evil.

While Godcat lives with the Higgins family, who know that Godcat is God, Devilcat lives with their neighbor, Karen.

Although Godcat and Devilcat have clashing objectives, they discover that they enjoy similar things and find unlikely companionship in each other.

Initially, Godcat does not care about the Higgins, but as he cares about returning to Heaven, he tries to help them, whereas Devilcat tries to ruin his plans.

Ultimately, all their actions inadvertently end up helping the Higgins reconnect with each other. Over time, Godcat starts caring about the family.

Godcat is now motivated to help and lead humans down the right path, while Devilcat tries to do the opposite. Despite that, they grow closer.

When Devilcat has to attend a cousin’s wedding in Hell, she asks Godcat to accompany her as her plus-one. Godcat agrees, intending to spy to discover the root of all evil.

In Hell, instead of finding the root of all evil, God spends the night with Beelzebub in their original form, and they end up sleeping together.

God and Beelzebub also discover that Satan dated a human named Shirley, who is Beelzebub’s mother, which means Beelzebub is half-human.

After returning to Earth as Devilcat, she decides to find her mother. To do that, she convinces Abbie to drive her children on a trip to the town where Beelzebub’s mother lives.

Abbie and Greta had earlier used Devilcat’s invention, the Regret Portal, which had made Greta believe that her mother’s biggest regret in life was quitting her job to have children.

Abbie takes Devilcat’s advice to take her children on a trip to convince Greta that she does not regret having her, only to get separated from her children when they reach the town.

Meanwhile, Devilcat meets her mother and helps her expose her church’s pastor. Shirley then tells Devilcat how even her father, who was the greatest devil, failed constantly.

Shirley assures Devilcat that, as she is half-human, she understands humans better and will someday be as successful as her father.

Shirley and Devilcat’s exchange makes Greta understand her mother’s complex feelings about quitting her job, and she realizes that her mother does not regret having her and her brother.

On their way back home, Devilcat enters a portal to Hell and sees her assistant having drinks with cherubs from Heaven.

She then finds out that she and God were kept in the dark about the fact that Heaven and Hell are negotiating a merger, which is the main reason they were sent to Earth.

The boards of Heaven and Hell will be choosing a CEO of the new firm, and Devilcat, who is now more assertive and scarier, threatens her assistant to get her name on the list.

She then tries to stand out to the board members by solving the crisis at SeaWorld, and Godcat, who has become compassionate, decides to help her, just like he helped Marv get promoted.

As Godcat would also want the CEO position, Devilcat does not tell him about the merger, but he eventually finds out about it and feels betrayed.

Godcat and Devilcat go back to being adversaries because they both want to be the CEO of the new firm. At the same time, the Higgins continue growing close even without Godcat’s intervention.

Ending explained:

Marv and Abbie find their way back to each other

While Marv and Abbie have successfully reconnected with their children, they have yet to reconnect with each other.

Marv takes Abbie to a party thrown by his boss, Herb, on a blimp, where Abbie realizes that she and Marv have not done anything together in a long time.

Additionally, Herb adopts Marv. Soon after, Herb dies when the blimp crashes, leaving everything he owns to Marv.

Marv is now the new CEO of the supermarket and its subsidiaries. Between managing the store and his game nights, Marv has no time for Abbie.

After realizing that she and Marv have drifted apart, Abbie wants to spend more time with Marv, who points out that Abbie was the one who stopped caring about everything he likes.

Abbie then tries to make amends, but she fails, as Marv is busy handling a crisis at work. The FDA is investigating the supermarket because they suspect that it is involved in various crimes.

It turns out that Herb was embezzling funds, and when the FDA started investigating, he adopted Marv and faked his own death to put the blame on Marv.

Abbie sees Herb sneaking around the store and finds out the truth, leading to Herb kidnapping her. It is Marv who comes to her rescue and impresses her by pulling off action moves.

Together, Marv and Abbie capture Herb, which results in his arrest. This adventure brings the couple closer, and they decide to spend more time together doing things that interest them both.

The God Games

Now that Godcat knows about the merger, he goes to Heaven and convinces the board that he cares about humans and should be considered for the CEO position of the new firm.

The board decides to select the CEO through a series of games called the God Games. Anyone can participate in these games, and the winner will control both Hell and Heaven.

As the participants have to choose human advisors, Godcat chooses Travis and Devilcat chooses Greta. Out of all the participants, Godcat and Devilcat are the only ones who make it to the final round.

It is then that Devilcat, who was leading the competition, finds out that she is pregnant with Godcat’s baby and fails to get any points in the last round.

On the other hand, Godcat earns a point when his task to help Travis overcome his need for online validation is successfully completed once Travis realizes that trolls project their own insecurities.

Travis, who had earlier fought with his best friend after finding out that he was the one trolling him online, reconciles with his friend because he now knows that his friend is just insecure.

With Godcat earning a point in the last round, he ties with Devilcat, leaving the final competition in the hands of their human advisors.

Greta and Travis race across a dangerous course, and as Travis crosses the line first, Godcat wins the God Games and becomes the CEO of Heaven and Hell.

Saving the human race

The board informs Godcat that his first task as the CEO is to annihilate humans, who have become a major problem for Heaven and Hell, and start over.

However, Godcat has come to care for humans, so he refuses, which results in the board making Devilcat the CEO and asking her to annihilate the human race.

Devilcat, who is sick of living in her father’s shadow and being told what to do, is moved by Greta’s tears and decides to get rid of the board members instead of the human race.

Devilcat kills the board members and finally becomes a ferocious devil. She then goes into labor, and Godcat finds out about her pregnancy.

Devilcat is taken to Abbie, who works at Animal Control, for help in delivering her baby. With Godcat and Devilcat gone, a surviving board member presses the apocalypse button.

When humans notice a meteor rapidly approaching and threatening to collide with the planet, Godcat decides to risk his life and go to space to save the human race.

With the help of Greta’s homebuilt rocket, he manages to stop the meteor and return to Earth safely. Godcat realizes that he has successfully become empathetic.

He has also succeeded in bringing the Higgins family closer together; Marv, Abbie, Greta, and Travis have come to value each other.

The show ends with Devilcat giving birth. She gives birth to several kittens, both good and evil, filling the Higgins’ yard with exploding kittens.
