In Damsel, Elodie, the protagonist, resolves to save herself from a dangerous dragon to whom she is sacrificed after marrying a prince. Millie Bobby Brown plays Elodie.
Elodie is a noblewoman who tries to help her people in whatever way she can. She agrees to marry Prince Henry of Aurea, aware that her people would benefit from the bridge price.
Elodie believes that sacrificing her own happiness is a small price to pay for the well-being of her people, but when she meets Henry, she realizes that she might not have to make such a sacrifice after all.
He shares her dreams; like her, he desires to explore the world. Additionally, Elodie finds herself getting along with Henry, so she marries him, hoping for a happy future.
Elodie’s hopes are dashed when she realizes that Henry only married her because his family intended to sacrifice her to a dragon for the sake of their kingdom.
The spirit of a survivor
Apart from Henry’s betrayal, the fact that her father agreed to sacrifice her in exchange for gold also hurts Elodie.
She finds herself alone, scared, and hurt in the dragon’s lair, but she successfully manages to hide from the dragon.
Instead of dwelling on the betrayal, Elodie focuses on surviving. The fact that several innocent women like her were sacrificed further strengthens her resolve to find a way out of the lair.
Elodie proves to be not only courageous but also clever and resourceful. She makes the best use of what she finds in the lair to escape.
Even when she faces failure, she does not give up. She becomes a problem for the dragon, who struggles to kill her.
A kind-hearted woman
Time and time again, Elodie shows her kind-hearted nature, treating both humans and animals with compassion.
When her father returns to the lair to rescue her, he asks for her forgiveness, realizing that he cannot live with himself if he leaves her to die.
Elodie forgives her father and manages to escape the dragon’s lair, only to discover that her younger sister, Floria, has been sacrificed in her place.
Determined to save Floria, Elodie bravely returns to the lair. This time, Elodie has no choice but to face the dragon head-on.
She decides to tell the dragon the truth about how the royal family has been deceiving her, but the dragon refuses to believe her.
Elodie then finds a way to mortally wound the dragon but chooses to heal it instead of killing it, recognizing that they both have been deceived by the same people.
As a result, Elodie and the dragon join forces to take revenge on the royal family. Despite everything, Elodie offers one last chance to everyone at the palace to flee before the dragon burns it to the ground.
She eventually gathers supplies to aid her people and resolves to care for them alongside her stepmother and sister. Now with the dragon by her side, Elodie returns home.
