Plot summary
Gannu is a good-for-nothing man who spends his days drinking with his friends and getting into trouble.
Gannu is married to Nirmala, the daughter of a schoolteacher. She married him because she fell in love with him and believed that Gannu would change.
However, Gannu does not change his ways, so Nirmala refuses to have children with him. When she gets pregnant, she decides to abort her baby.
To persuade his wife to keep the baby, Gannu lies to her that the local MLA, Dauji, who is quite fond of Gannu, has promised to make him a municipal corporator.
Dauji consents to Gannu representing their party and running as a corporator candidate in the upcoming elections, but Gannu has a competitor, Satto.
Satto also wishes to represent Dauji’s party. Due to this, Gannu gets into a fight with Satto and injures him, which makes Gannu look like a goon.
As a person’s public image is very important in politics, Dauji chooses Satto instead of Gannu to represent his party.
Like every night, Gannu gets drunk with his friends that night as well and makes a number of bad decisions.
He decides to go to Delhi and get in the good books of the politician whom Dauji has been trying to impress. However, his plan backfires.
Gannu and his friends break laws and land in prison, ruining Dauji’s reputation, which results in Dauji breaking all ties with Gannu.
Nirmala had only agreed to keep the baby because she had come to believe that Gannu was going to be a corporator and change as a person.
When she comes to know what happened in Delhi, Nirmala decides to abort the baby. This drives Gannu to prove to Nirmala that he can become a corporator on his own.
Gannu must make a name for himself and gain public support without Dauji’s backing. To do that, Gannu organizes a protest.
The only problem is that he has not decided what he is protesting against. Unsurprisingly, he gets drunk when he should be brainstorming.
He then gets into an argument with Balwant, the man who sponsors Dauji’s campaigns. Balwant owns the town’s only wine shop, and Gannu and his friends raid his shop.
The next morning, Gannu has to announce his reason for protesting. Balwant’s presence there leads to Gannu making an unexpected announcement.
A hungover Gannu ends up claiming that he is protesting to get alcohol banned in their town, which surprises everyone in the crowd.
The women of Jagodhar are sick of their husbands neglecting their families and spending their hard-earned money on alcohol, so they immediately show their support for Gannu’s cause.
These women see Gannu as a beacon of hope and join his protest. Soon, the matter gets out of Gannu’s hands.
Nirmala, who has not aborted the baby yet, tells Gannu that this is his last chance to be a good man, and Gannu is forced to give up drinking.
While the men of the town are against Gannu, he has the women’s support. As a result, Dauji asks Satto to crush Gannu’s protest.
Ending explained:
Overcoming temptation
Satto pretends to have a change of heart. He tells Gannu and his supporters that he has withdrawn from the elections, as he now believes that Gannu should win.
Satto joins Gannu’s protest but keeps getting Gannu’s friends drunk behind his back. Gannu also struggles to overcome his dependence on alcohol.
Satto also suggests that Gannu march through the town to get more people to join his protest.
When Gannu passes by the wine shop with his supporters, Balwant tries to tempt him to drink and end the protest, but Gannu refuses to take the bait.
Thinking that Gannu’s resolve can be broken, Satto sneaks him alcohol at night. However, instead of drinking, Gannu exposes Satto’s misdeeds to his supporters.
It turns out that Gannu had known Satto’s intentions; he was aware that Satto had been trying to lure him with alcohol to bring his protest to an end.
To get rid of Satto, Gannu and his best friend laid a trap for him and led him to believe that Gannu had been craving alcohol.
As expected, Satto brought him a bottle, and Gannu was able to expose him. Satto is beaten up by Gannu’s supporters, who wreck Balwant’s wine shop as well.
Satto’s public image takes a blow. On the other hand, Nirmala, proud of her husband, decides to keep the baby.
Threats and choices
Gannu’s protest gets a lot of media attention. The number of his supporters increase, and even NGOs join his efforts.
Gannu’s rising popularity becomes a threat to Dauji’s party, and when Gannu files a petition in court to ban alcohol in their town, Dauji decides to do something about it.
Before Gannu can file his nomination for the municipal elections, Dauji has Gannu arrested on charges of inciting the public.
This results in a woman named Janki, who has been Gannu’s staunch supporter since the very beginning, setting herself on fire.
Gannu thinks about ending his protest, but Nirmala makes him understand that he cannot do that, as the hopes of several women like Janki are riding on him.
Dauji then offers to let Gannu represent his party in the elections. When Gannu refuses, Dauji threatens to kill Janki and frame Gannu for her death.
Gannu is left with no choice but to end his protest. In return, he wins the backing of Dauji’s party, which turns Gannu’s supporters against him.
A man who makes his family proud
Dauji brings Gannu to the people who were his supporters and were protesting with him. Dauji asks them to forgive Gannu and support him in the upcoming elections.
Instead of apologizing, Gannu tells the crowd that Dauji has helped him realize the importance of buying and selling alcohol.
Gannu announces that Dauji will protest by drinking only alcohol until alcohol is made compulsory for all in their town.
Dauji is not amused by Gannu’s speech and threatens him once again. This time, Gannu refuses to bow down to him, as he now has an ace up his sleeve.
Gannu is wearing a wire, and he makes the crowd hear Dauji’s threats. Gannu’s supporters then find out why Gannu was forced to end the protest.
Gannu regains his supporters, whereas Dauji loses his. Dauji is forced to resign from the legislative assembly, and his political career comes to an end.
The chief minister promises Gannu that he will introduce a bill to ban alcohol, and he keeps his promise.
Furthermore, Balwant’s liquor store is closed down after it is revealed that he had been producing and selling fake liquor. Alcohol is no longer sold in Jagodhar
Finally, Gannu wins the elections and becomes a municipal corporator. Nirmala gives birth to their daughter, overjoyed by the changes she sees in her husband.
