The finale of What If…? season 2 sees the former hero of the multiverse, Dr. Strange Supreme, turn bad as he plans to correct his wrongs by doing more wrongs.
In What If…? season 1, Dr. Strange Supreme lost the love of his life, Christine Palmer. This was before he came to earn the title of ‘Supreme.’
Driven mad and struck with immense grief, he set off on a quest to bring her back from the dead.
To do so, he lost his soul, his sanity, and eventually, his entire universe, which is finally when he realized his erroneous ways.
As penance, he helped out the Watcher and a band of heroes save the multiverse.
The sorcerer lies
In the What If…? season 2 finale, Dr. Strange Supreme reveals he has been busy ever since trapping the Infinity Killmonger and Arnim Zola inside a pocket dimension to save the multiverse.
He has been collecting universe killers from across the universes and keeping them inside his Sanctum Infinitum.
He takes Peggy there and asks her to help him catch one villain who escaped.
She goes to this universe she has escaped to and learns it’s Kahhori, who tells the bad guy is not her but Strange himself, right when the Sorcerer Supreme pulls both back inside the Sanctum Infinitum.
Strange Supreme’s plan
Kahhori reveals that Strange intends to throw all the collected heroes and villains into a forge he’s created, to resurrect his home universe.
Peggy confirms he’s doing this to bring Christine back as well as right his cosmic wrongs, and tries to stop him, but he won’t budge.
He says Peggy should be the one to understand him, since she, as he presumes, would do the same to get her Steve back. She corrects his presumptuous wrongs and opposes him.
Captain Carter ideates a radical plan, which involves freeing some of the universe’s killers and heroes alike. This prison outbreak keeps Strange busy while Kahhori and Peggy head for the forge.
They contend with a flurry of villains on the way, including Zombie Wanda, Hela, Surtur, Thanos, and Infinity Killmonger, before finally arriving at the edge of the forge.
The sorcerer gone bad, again, arrives on time as well.
Demons down the forge
Both parties try their best to send the prisoners to different destinations; Strange forces them into the forge, while Peggy tries to prevent them and Kahhori tries to portal them to their respective universes.
In the end, Kahhori finds success and sends them all to their homes.
Strange is overwhelmed by his grief and his inner demons, who take over him and beat the combined might of Infinity Captain Carter and Kahhori.
As the forge begins collapsing in on itself, Strange Supreme pulls Peggy with himself and plunges into the forge. Peggy manages to push him away and grabs onto a ledge.
The demonic self of Supreme tries lunging out but Dr. Strange keeps them contained, and as he falls into the forge, he destroys his demons, and himself.
In doing so, though, he manages to execute his plan for success, recreating his home universe, where he was never born, nor will he ever be.
Before What If…? season 2 rolls the credits, Peggy and the Watcher behold as Strange’s home universe, and the Christine Palmer in it, exist with a serene peace.
