In The Great Seduction, Dr. Mateo Suárez is the doctor who can save Santa María from dying. Pierre Louis plays Dr. Mateo.
Mateo works at a hospital in a city. He was looking forward to a promotion. However, his best friend, Mau, ended up getting that position. A disappointed Mateo needed some consolation, and at a time like this, even his fiancée, Lucía, wasn’t there for him.
A drunk Mateo urinated on a car outside the hospital, which infuriated his boss, who, just because Mateo is a great doctor and is good with patients, decided not to take his medical license away but send him to Santa María for a month.
The townsfolk of Santa María need a doctor to move to their island. They survive on money provided by the Unemployment Offices. The presence of Mateo on the island will allow a packing company to build a plant here that will give everyone new jobs.
Pleasing Mateo
In order to make Mateo stay, the townsfolk get their research done right and monitor him. They learn that he loves American Football. The town of Santa María celebrates soccer.
For Mateo, the people here learn American Football and create an environment where this sport is watched, played, and celebrated every day.
They overhear Mateo talking to his fiancée about how he misses chicken tikka masala, and the cooks at Santa María’s restaurant quickly learn the dish after looking up its recipe online.
Germán instructs Jorge, who is into music, to spend time with Mateo listening to some rock music, even though Jorge doesn’t like rock.
Mateo’s backstory
After connecting with Mateo on a surface level, Germán dares to cross a line by using Mateo’s dark past to bring him closer to them. When Mateo was a kid, he lost his four-year-old brother in an accident.
The ambulance took a long time to come to his brother’s rescue. The event scarred Mateo for life and made him want to become a doctor and save lives.
Mateo stays for Santa María
Germán’s plan to make Mateo stay works. At the last moment, Germán changes his mind after watching Mateo in a mess. Mateo learns that his fiancée, Lucía, has been cheating on him with his best friend, Mau.
Not being able to see this makes Mateo feel like a joke. Germán realizes that what they are doing to Mateo is nothing different. To make sure Mateo doesn’t suffer again, Germán rejects Mateo as their new doctor.
Once Mateo learns the truth, he confronts Germán, who explains the situation of their dying island. Don Claudio, a resident of Santa María, helps a furious Mateo change his mind.
Don Claudio advises Mateo to not focus on the bad and to look at the sunshine beyond the clouds. Hence, Mateo thinks about the good that the people of Santa María have given him and decides to be their doctor.
Mateo’s presence not only allows the packing company to build a plant and give people jobs but also brings back people’s loved ones who had moved away. The town gets back on its feet, and the schools here start raising doctors, engineers, and astronauts.
