Djagad: Cigarette Girl character explained

In Cigarette Girl, Djagad is Mr. Idroes’s competitor in the Kretek-selling business. Verdi Solaiman plays Djagad.

In the 1960s, Djagad competes with Mr. Idroes’ Merdeka Kretek with his Proklamasi Kretek. Unlike Mr. Idroes, Djagad keeps making changes to his Kretek brand to stay relevant.

Mr. Idroes believes that Djagad’s kretek will never be able to compete with the brand he has built. Mr. Idroes also thinks that Djagad despises him because his wife, Roemaisa, chose Idroes over Djagad.

Djagad’s wicked plan

When Djagad’s many efforts to take Idroes down fail, he grabs an opportunity that comes his way. Djagad notices Raja’s association with the Red Party.

Soldiers come to Mr. Idroes’ house, originally looking for Raja. They find the Red Party’s cigarettes that Raja used to help the Red Party members with and take Mr. Idroes and his daughter, Dasiyah, also known as Jeng Yah, with them. Mr. Idroes died after his arrest.

Raja comes to their aid but is asked to run away by Jeng Yah. Djagad ends up saving Raja. He blackmails Raja into working for him. Raja obeys everything Djagad says because Djagad is close to the general, which may ensure Jeng Yah’s safety.

Raja even goes on to marry Djagad’s daughter, Purwanti, and build a business empire with him, only to later learn that Djagad never made efforts to help Jeng Yah and that Djagad was the one who removed Raja’s name from the army’s list and put Idroes’ on it.

Raja met Jeng Yah again in 1975. He explained to her what Djagad had done and convinced her to run away with him, but she didn’t show up on the day they were supposed to do that.

After Djagad’s death, Raja fixed Djagad’s mistakes by paying Mr. Idroes’ employees and making significant changes to the company, hoping that Jeng Yah would see them.
