Christine Wang: American Born Chinese character explained

Christine Wang is Jin’s mother and Simon’s wife who is always pushing them to be more confident if they want to achieve better things in life. Yeo Yann Yann plays the role of Christine in the series.

Christine Wang appears to be a typical immigrant mother at the beginning as she’s quite overbearing and always looking for value for money rather than giving into Jin’s taste.

However, just like all mothers her intentions are good and all she wants is for her family to do better so that they can live a comfortable life. She constantly gets into arguments with Simon over his situation at work because she asks him to approach his boss but he prefers not to.

She also uses his example to convince Jin to speak up for himself when Jin messes up his first tryout for the soccer team. When she gets a new idea after visiting her herbalist, it pushes her to do something that puts her relationship in jeopardy.

Realizing what’s important

When Simon tells Christine that his boss is retiring, Christine makes him realize that it means a new position is potentially opening up. He doesn’t end up getting it and Christine believes it is because he didn’t fight for it.

Christine Wang and her husband have their fare share of marital issues

She visits an old Chinese herbalist for acupuncture treatments and herbal powder but when she hears that the shop is closing due to low sales, she decides to buy a whole crate of the powder.

She ends up selling most of the bottles at her church and gets the idea to turn it into a business. After Simon’s rejection at work, he says that he’s going to quit and find something else but Christine says he can’t afford to quit because she used half their savings.

Simon doesn’t believe it is a sound investment and this drives a wedge between them that affects Jin’s behavior too. When they’re called into school, Simon stands up for Christine’s ability as a mother.

He then comes back home from work early one day to help her find the pendant that they believe is lost. They go back to the restaurant and a battered and bruised Sun Wukong is in the basement.

He gives them some useful advice about being a parent and they realize where they went wrong. They decide to go for Jin’s game and witness the entire final battle.

However, when Jin returns home he finds out that Christine and Simon have been kidnapped by Princess Iron Fan.
