Plot summary
Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga opens at Kullu airport where a battered and bruised Ankit Sethi (Sunny Kaushal) is being interrogated. He is asked why the hijackers only beat him up out of 150 passengers aboard the plane.
He claims he has no clue why he was targeted. The plot then rewinds to 8 hours before and goes to Al-Barkat. We see a group of hijackers boarding a Max Asia flight and Ankit’s girlfriend Neha Grover (Yami Gautam Dhar) is one of the air hostesses aboard it.
A conversation with a colleague reveals that Neha is pregnant. Another flashback reveals how she meets Ankit 8 months ago aboard a flight and they connect over a vegan meal.
Later, they run into each other multiple times and Ankit manages to ask her out successfully. The two become close and start dating. When they discover that Neha is pregnant, Ankit proposes to her.
However, she discovers that Ankit is in a lot of debt. He started a diamond insurance company a few years back and an employee misplaced ₹20 Crores worth of diamonds.
Now the client wants him to steal diamonds from his own firm to make up for the loss. Neha is distraught and reveals that her father used to launder money for the underworld, a job that eventually got him killed. She states that she doesn’t want their child to experience the same life.
They decide to move on but things don’t end well. They are attacked by the client’s goons and Neha suffers a miscarriage. Ankit is distraught but Neha convinces him to steal the diamonds as she doesn’t want anything to happen to him.
Luckily, Ankit’s boss makes a deal with India’s Home Minister to smuggle expensive diamonds into India. They are encrusted on the back of a phone which is locked in a case that opens with a pin. It is aboard the same plane Neha is in and Ankit is tasked with overseeing the delivery, alongside a mysterious courier man.
Ankit gets the code for the case from the minister’s assistant Bhagat by bribing him and plans to steal the diamonds in the air to avoid the GPS tracker on the phone. The final step is to locate the courier, knock them out with a sedative and take the case.
However, before the couple can confirm the identity of the courier, the plane is hijacked. The terrorists demand the release of Kashmiri separatist Adil Mir, who is locked up in Manali. They force the pilot to head for Kullu instead of New Delhi.
Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga ending explained in detail:
Does Ankit get the diamonds?
The authorities send RAW agent Parvez Shaikh (Sharad Kelkar) to Kullu to bring Adil Mir to the airport. They don’t intend to release him but use him as bait to take down the hijackers.
Aboard the flight, Neha tries to occasionally distract the terrorists so that Ankit can sneak into the business class to retrieve the diamonds. He fakes an asthma attack and confirms the location of the case as he pretends to look for a pump.
However, one of the goons notices something fishy and breaks his nose. Ankit bleeds profusely as Neha tries to help him. Elsewhere, the Home Minister also sends Bhagat to Kullu as government aid to the passengers.
In actuality, it is to make sure the diamonds are delivered safely and discreetly. When the hijackers go near the cockpit to talk to the Indian authorities, Ankit sneaks into the business class and manages to steal the real diamonds. He puts a fake phone inside the case and heads back.
However, he is noticed by a terrorist again and a scuffle breaks out. As he is beaten up, one of the passengers, who is an Air Marshall, breaks free and shoots the hijackers dead.
The tragedy is over but he notices that Ankit is bound in the lavatory with a bomb. As the flight lands in Kullu, it is revealed that the bomb is a dud. The passengers head into the airport and another twist awaits.
Who are the hijackers?
The security forces search the plane and no bodies are found. They conclude that the hijacking was fake and the perpetrators (who had masks on) have blended into the crowd.
Furthermore, the Air Marshall who shot the terrorists wasn’t the real one. This imposter was also the only person who escaped from Kullu airport. The real Air Marshall was knocked out with a sedative and has no idea about the hijacking.
Shaikh detains the passengers and starts interrogating them. Elsewhere, Ankit meets Bhagat and gives him the stolen diamonds. He has a diamond expert with him who confirms that the gems are fake.
Bhagat threatens a shocked Ankit, who claims that if he had to double-cross him, he’d have left without meeting him. Neha goes to comfort him, but he loses control, grabs her by the neck, and exclaims that he only wooed her for the diamonds.
As we reach the moment from the beginning of the film where Shaikh interrogates Ankit, we see Neha’s twist to the tale.
What is Neha’s story?
After the miscarriage, Neha discovers that Ankit has been playing her. The goons who attacked them were Ankit’s own men, and he just wants her for the diamonds.
She follows him and discovers that he’s also been sleeping with other women. Distraught at losing her child and being betrayed, Neha vows revenge and calls her former ally Sudhanshu (the fake Air Marshall).
We find out that Neha was an active part of the criminal world until she left that life behind. She asks Sudhanshu to plan a fake hijacking and steal the diamonds for their team just to ruin Ankit.
Their plan includes brutally beating up Ankit and not touching any other passenger. They also do not have real guns. One of them makes fake ones inside the plane’s lavatory using a mold.
Sudhanshu has the only real weapon, which he steals from the knocked-out Air Marshall and fills up with dummy bullets. He uses them to shoot his allies.
Is Neha caught?
Finally, after Ankit’s interrogation, Shaikh narrows in on Neha. Before heading into the interrogation room, she calls the Home Minister and sends him an image of a text exchange between Bhagat and Ankit.
Shaikh is certain that Neha and Sudhanshu planned the heist, but before he can break her, he gets a call from the Home Minister. The politician berates him for detaining passengers and investigating a hijacking that never really happened.
Forced to follow orders, Shaikh lets Neha go and sarcastically congratulates her for succeeding with the plan. Ankit tries to coax her for information but is dragged out by the minister’s men.
Ankit and Bhagat are bound and beaten up as the politician shows them the image of the text. He finally realizes that Neha played him back and laughs.
In the final scene, we see Neha visit a bruised Ankit in the hospital. She mentions that he forced her to come back into this line of work and paid the price for betraying her.
