Chief Yoon & Chief Im’s rivalry in Doctor Cha explained

Doctor Cha’s Chief Yoon and Chief Im seem to be at each other’s throats every second they’re on the screen. The latest episode sheds much-needed light on the reason behind their hilarious perpetual fight.

Gusan University Hospital is rife with tensions and stress, which is to be expected from a hospital where patients and families aplenty gain and lose hope so frequently and constantly.

However, the drama between the faculty members takes the cake as along with the central conflict of the show unraveling largely at the hospital, there are other supporting storylines and characters who also happen to have their own strife and struggles with each other.

Heads of departments who butt heads a lot

Doctor Yoon Tae-Sik is the chief of the Department of Surgery and Doctor Im Jong-Kwon is the chief of the Department of Family Medicine.

The two respected and senior doctors are often shown to be at odds with each other, with an invisible lighting and thunder display imbibing the atmosphere surrounding them as they glare at each other and growl a couple of times as well.

They are always being passive-aggressive with each other and passing remarks both indirectly and directly. Their little heated exchanges make for some of the more underrated moments of comic relief in the show.

However, their constant butting of heads is not without a reason, as episode 9 of Doctor Cha finally gives the explanation behind their hilarious enmity.

The History of bad blood

Contrary to the state of things in the present day, Chief Yoon and Chief Im used to be best friends at one point. Back during their college days, they were on the very best of terms and so close that Chief Yoon even introduced his younger sister to Chief Im.

However, as their verbal spat in the episode reveals, things turned sour between the two when Im Jong-Kwon left Yoon Tae-Sik’s sister to go marry a rich girl. Tae-Sik carries resentment against Jong-Kwon for this very reason and refers to his former best friend’s decision to leave his sister as a betrayal.

Tae-Sik’s sister apparently did not decide to marry anyone and remains single. Meanwhile, Jong-Kwon shouts at Tae-Sik to move on and not pin the blame on him if his sister opted to grow old alone.

Through a discussion between younger doctors, it’s also revealed that both the senior doctors are divorced and live alone, which may explain the reason why they’re always so embittered and lean on the booze so much. However, there also exists a mutual respect between the two as they go about their quarrels while only time will tell how their enmity evolves in the future episodes of Doctor Cha.
