Charlie: Platonic character explained

In Platonic, Charlie is Sylvia’s husband and an attorney. Initially, he is fine with Sylvia reconnecting with Will until she starts spending more time with Will than him. Luke Macfarlane plays Charlie.

Charlie comes off as a loving husband who supports Sylvia and encourages her to reconnect with Will when she learns that he has divorced Audrey. He tells her to ignore what people will think and be there for her friend.

Charlie’s advice does wonders, as Sylvia is able to rekindle the old magic she had with Will. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work for Charlie the same way, and he soon finds himself in the position where Audrey once was.

Cracks in Charlie and Sylvia’s relationship

Will is not solely to be blamed for the small cracks in Sylvia and Charlie’s relationship. Charlie knows Sylvia inside and out. So he tries to hide the news about Vanessa becoming a partner at their firm from her because he is aware of how Sylvia is going to react.

Sylvia loses her mind, just like he had expected, after realizing that Vanessa is everything she could have been as a lawyer and a mother. She just gets more push by hanging out with Will. She pours out her frustration on Frank Schaeffer, a successful attorney, by eating his speech and asking him to remember her name.

Charlie expresses that he felt jealous watching Sylvia have fun with Will

Due to Sylvia’s behavior, Charlie will have to work hard to bring Frank back on his side, as he is an asset to his firm. While Charlie and Sylvia’s relationship is suffering, the latter hangs out with Will more than ever.

Sylvia starts making decisions concerning her house with Will rather than Charlie. It bothers Charlie, although he doesn’t show it.

Will & Charlie’s friendship

Will starts meeting Sylvia more often, and they both indulge in activities Charlie has never done with Sylvia. Charlie feels jealous, seeing how much fun they both have with each other. He misses this side of Sylvia.

Charlie overthinks and blames himself for not making an effort to be a great friend to Will. This sees him inviting Will to a Dodgers game. Will is, at first, not sure about this invitation. Will’s friends deduce that this is a jealous husband inviting him.

Will and Charlie have never hung out before. The only time they were alone was to pick up pizza. Will was forced to pretend that he had watched the show that Charlie had.

During the Dodgers game, Will lets Charlie know that he is seeing someone else and calms him down. While hanging out at Will’s bar, Charlie is assured that he doesn’t need to have fun with Sylvia the way Will does. Sylvia loves Charlie differently. She is with him because he is more mature and responsible, unlike Will.

Things get out of hand when Charlie learns that Will allowed Sylvia to take ketamine during his divorce party. At the end of the day, Charlie lets this incident go, and all he asks Sylvia is to have fun with him the way she has with Will. Charlie asks her to bleach his hair to kick off this new start.
