Chairman Song: The Good Bad Mother character explained

In The Good Bad Mother, Chairman Song is the man who kills Choi Kang-ho’s father and then adopts him as his son. Choi Moo-sung plays the role of Song Woo-byeok in The Good Bad Mother.

When Young-soon was pregnant with Kang-ho and Chairman Song was the Director of Yongra Construction, that was the first time Kang-ho’s parents met Song Woo-byeok.

During the preparation for the Seoul Olympics, Director Song visits Young-soon’s husband, Hae-sik, with his men. They try to persuade him to allow them to demolish his pig farm for the Olympics, as his farm might be seen on TV during the torch relay and marathon.

The conflict

Hae-sik refuses to let Director Song demolish the farm that his family has been running for generations. In fact, he points out that Director Song talks about patriotism but smokes foreign cigarettes that he goes around offering people. Director Song then decides to take matters into his own hands.

At night, Director Song comes to Hae-sik’s farm and gets his men to set fire to it. One of the villagers witnesses him and his men setting fire to the farm. Additionally, an American cigarette that Director Song smokes is found at the sight.

Hae-sik realizes that this was an act of arson and not an accident. He tries to prove this in court. However, Director Song claims that he gave the cigarette to several villagers and buys the witnesses to win the case. Since there is no evidence against him, he is acquitted of all charges.

Despite losing in court, Hae-sik refuses to give up. He records his conversation with one of the witnesses who confess that they lied in court because they needed money, and Director Song gave it to them. This is enough to file an appeal.

He even does his research and finds out that Director Song is the heir to Yongra Construction and that there have been several incidents of fire on demolition sites where Director Song was in charge.

What he does not know is that the prosecutor has also been bribed by Director Song. The prosecutor informs Director Song about Hae-sik’s plans, and Director Song corners Hae-sik with his men on his way home at night.

He kills Hae-sik without any hesitation for not giving up and hangs him from a tree to make it look like a suicide. With Hae-sik dead, a pregnant Young-soon is left without any support.

Kang-ho’s new father

Hae-sik’s son, Kang-ho, grows up to be a prosecutor. Instead of fighting for the truth, he fights cases to protect a powerful man’s interests. This man is none other than Director Song, who has now become Chairman Song. He expanded and grew Yongra Construction into Woobyeok Group.

Chairman Song calls Kang-ho to take care of the scandalous headlines regarding his personal life as well as his business in the papers, and Kang-ho does not disappoint him.

As Chairman Song’s one and only grandson is not reliable at all, he wishes he had a reliable son like Kang-ho, who also wants a father like Chairman Song. Due to this, Chairman Song allows Kang-ho to call him father.

Kang-ho learns from Chairman Song that home runs and strikeouts allow players to play without running. So when Assemblyman Oh does not allow Kang-ho to date his daughter, he brings Chairman Song evidence that could cost him the upcoming presidential elections.

In return, he wants Chairman Song to legally adopt him. This way, Kang-ho’s social status will change overnight, allowing him to marry Assemblyman Oh’s daughter, and Chairman Song will be invincible with the future president, Assemblyman Oh, on his side.

Chairman Song decides to adopt Kang-ho, and as his father, he asks Kang-ho to get rid of the evidence against Assemblyman Oh by killing his illegitimate son and the mother of the child, but Kang-ho does not do that.

Chairman Song killed a man like Hae-sik, but he does not get away with it, as years later, Hae-sik’s son, Kang-ho, comes to avenge his father’s death and punish Chairman Song for his crimes.
