Cha Ha-Yul is the exceptionally wise little daughter of Cho Hae-Dal. Kim Do-Eun plays the character in Welcome to Samdal-ri.
Cha Ha-Yul is a nine-year-old girl who’s wise beyond her years in a way that’s funny and endearing at first glance and with more time with her, it also becomes really heartening.
Wise beyond her years
Ha-Yul’s mother is only 29 years of age as well, and little Ha-Yul is shown to exercise more discipline than her mother, making one almost question who among the two is actually more mature.
Cho Hae-Dal seems to be more balanced and mature out of the three sisters, and yet her daughter seems to be the wisest of all.
As the story continues, the viewers get more explanation behind her wisdom and emotional maturity at such a young age.
Past & pity
Cha Ha-Yul’s father died before she was even born, due to a car accident, leaving Hae-Dal to raise Ha-Yul all by herself. Being of such a tender age, it has obviously been challenging for her, but she has taken it in stride.
Going by how she absolutely adores and dotes over her daughter, it’s easy to tell that she loves raising Ha-Yul and is very proud of her. However, that’s a sentiment others rarely share.
When Aunt Sam-Dal’s career takes a nosedive and she has to return to Samdal-ri, her sisters and Ha-Yul have to tag along as well. There, Ha-Yul comes to dislike the neighborhood at first because others see her with pity.
Work ethic & dreams
They talk about her father’s death and pity her for it. But she doesn’t see herself as the pitiable figure others see her as. In fact, her clarity regarding her father’s passing puts the village elders to shame.
When it comes to her education, she likes to solve third-grade problems even though she is only in second grade.
She says it’s because her aunt Sam-Dal says you have to work harder than others to achieve success.
She also doesn’t like to share what her dream is because she believes in actions more than words, and detests who are all bark no bite.
With other such uniquely wise quirks, she continues to be a source of strength for her mother and other family members.
