Bai Li: Wonderland character explained

In Wonderland, Bai Li’s concern for her daughter threatens the very existence of Wonderland. Tang Wei plays Bai Li.

Bai Li, a fund manager who has worked around the world, signs up for Wonderland upon learning that she is going to die soon.

In Wonderland, she chooses to be reconstructed as an archaeologist. After her death, Bai Li finds herself at an airport in Wonderland.

She travels to a desert for her job and enjoys her life there, unaware that she has died and is now living in a virtual world, not the real one.

A chance to lead a different life

Bai Li always wanted to be an archaeologist, and she gets to turn her dream into reality in Wonderland, where she is made to believe that she has always been an archaeologist.

Previously, she prioritized her job over her daughter, Jia, but in Wonderland, Bai Li does not make that mistake and makes time for her daughter.

Bai Li and Jia talk frequently, and Bai Li finally succeeds in being a friend to her daughter, something she failed to do when she was alive.

Although Bai Li bonds with her daughter and likes her job, she constantly feels like she is living inside a dream, as she keeps recalling her erased memories.

Bai Li’s mother’s behavior and remarks add to her confusion. This leads to Bai Li questioning her reality, which makes her unstable.

Sung-joon, a Wonderland employee, notices this and keeps checking in on her. He first makes her acquaintance at the airport.

He continues meeting her in Wonderland after realizing that Bai Li’s confusion could jeopardize the entire system.

A mother’s love

Bai Li’s mother disapproves of Jia becoming attached to the Wonderland version of Bai Li. She fears that her granddaughter will struggle to distinguish between reality and illusion.

Bai Li’s mother decides to discontinue her Wonderland services and move to China with Jia, intending to tell Jia the truth about Bai Li’s death.

Jia is reluctant to move to China and wants to visit Bai Li instead, so she runs away from her grandmother at the airport.

When Bai Li calls, the last thing she hears from her mother is about Jia getting lost at the airport before the service is discontinued, and the virtual Bai Li is deactivated.

Bai Li is put to sleep in Wonderland but remains anxious about her daughter. Somehow, she wakes up on her own and decides to fly to Korea to find her daughter.

The Wonderland employees try to deactivate her again or find ways to keep her in the desert, but nothing works. When she tries to leave the desert, she keeps reliving the same scene she experienced upon her arrival.

She faces a sandstorm as she approaches the operating system, threatening the stability of the entire system. Undeterred by the storm, she keeps moving forward to get to her daughter.

Once again, Sung-joon appears and tells her that the storm and everything around her is real only if she believes it is. Once Bai Li realizes that none of it is real, she sees the operating system.

The Wonderland employees deduce that Bai Li wants something, so they open the network for her, allowing her to be at the same airport as her mother and daughter, but in Wonderland.

Bai Li manages to contact Tae-ju and asks him to rescue Jia. Once Jia is saved, Bai Li, now remembering everything, tells her about her death and says goodbye to her mother.

Bai Li’s memories of her death are erased once again, and her journey as an archaeologist in Wonderland begins anew, with her meeting Sung-joon at the airport.
