In The Great Seduction (2023), Anita, also known as Ana, is a resident of Santa María who is primarily seen at the town’s internet cafe. Yalitza Aparicio plays Anita.
Anita is passionate about running a school and raising doctors, engineers, and astronauts on the island of Santa María. However, the town, which primarily harbors fishermen, is dying since a neighboring town opened a fish-packing company.
The people of Santa María now rely on the government’s unemployment checks handed to them by Anita.
Anita is the only person on the island of Santa María who feels that what they are planning to do with Dr. Mateo is wrong. Unlike the other townsfolk, Anita doesn’t want to lose her integrity and force someone to stay on this island.
She is well aware of the lies the townsfolk are going to paint to make Dr. Mateo stay. Furthermore, she points out that the packing company that is going to build a plant on this island and give the townsfolk new jobs could also be lying.
She agrees with the townsfolk only because there is hope that the school can reopen if they succeed in making Mateo stay and having the packing company build a plant here.
Anita’s contribution to seduction
Anita dedicates herself to helping the townsfolk create their lies and seduce Mateo into staying. She often takes charge and teaches them new stuff from the internet that Mateo likes. However, somewhere deep inside her heart, all of this hurts her.
Germán plans to make Mateo fall for Anita, which will give Mateo another reason to stay. Anita straightaway rejects this idea, pointing out that Mateo is already engaged. Germán still goes with the plan and lets Mateo know that Anita likes him, unbeknownst to Anita.
Anita’s fear of Mateo finding out the truth and getting hurt grows, forcing her to back out of this mess. However, she promises Germán that she won’t tell Mateo the truth.
Anita tells Mateo the truth
Germán eventually makes up his mind to not give Mateo the job as a doctor on this island after watching him lose the love of his life; German didn’t want to hurt him again.
Before leaving the island, Mateo visits Anita, who, upon learning that Germán has told Mateo that she likes him, decides to tell him the truth so that Mateo won’t have any false hope.
In the end, Mateo sees the efforts the townsfolk have put into making him comfortable and happy over the fact that they have lied and decides to be their doctor.
Mateo’s presence allows the packing company to build a plant on the island, giving everyone jobs and allowing Anita to start the town’s school again and work towards her passion of raising the future of the world on Santa María.
