Alex Walter, the sweet and dependable one among the Walter boys, wins Jackie’s heart and starts dating her. In My Life With the Walter Boys, Ashby Gentry plays Alex.
When Jackie comes to live with the Walters, Alex starts liking her. He is the only Walter who sticks up for her at school and at home. He even breaks his siblings’ no-snitching rule for Jackie.
Alex comforts Jackie whenever she is upset. He also makes her feel part of the family when the others do not. He soon becomes someone Jackie can rely on, and their friendship turns to love.
Overcoming his insecurities
Alex does not get along with his older brother, Cole. Although Alex is helpful and sweet, it is Cole who gets all the attention. Alex finds it hard to compete with his older brother, who can charm just about anyone.
An incident makes matters worse. Before Jackie moved to town, Alex was dating a girl named Paige. Cole, unaware that his brother was dating Paige, hooked up with her when she made advances.
The entire school was aware that Paige cheated on Alex with Cole, and that made Alex even more insecure. This ruined Alex and Cole’s relationship. When Jackie arrives, Alex has to compete with Cole once again.
As Alex is always there for her, Jackie chooses Alex over Cole. However, Alex takes this as an opportunity to get back at Cole. He keeps trying to make Cole jealous, and when Jackie finds out about the brother’s past conflict, she worries whether Alex is only dating her because he wants to win against Cole.
However, Alex realizes his mistake when Jackie questions him about their relationship. He assures Jackie that he is with her because he likes her. Furthermore, he finally speaks to Paige about their breakup.
Alex is no longer the insecure boy that he used to be. He knows that he is not Cole, but he recognizes his own self-worth. This realization helps Alex move on from what happened with Paige, who regrets losing him.
Conflicts and reconciliations
Once Alex and Jackie get together, things get worse between the brothers. Alex publicly punches his brother, and the whole school starts talking about their feud. The rumors lead to them getting into a fight at school.
Despite their parents’ insistence, Alex and Cole fail to resolve their differences. It is only when Alex’s county fair rodeo does not go as planned that the two brothers discuss their problems. They both acknowledge that they have been living in each other’s shadow.
Alex realizes that his brother never meant to hurt him and that he thinks highly of him. He regrets saying hurtful things to Cole and making him think that he is a disappointment. They apologize to each other and resolve their differences.
Alex also gets an offer to join a summer training camp in Montana from the Intercollegiate Riding Association. He then confesses his love to Jackie, but Jackie does not give him an answer. In fact, the next day, Jackie leaves for New York without saying goodbye to him.
