Alec: The Last of Us character explained

In The Last of Us episode 8, Ellie meets David, who is the leader of a small community, and it turns out that Joel killed one of his men, Alec.

David leads a small community in a town called Silver Lake. They are mourning the death of a member named Alec. David, who is also a preacher, reads a verse from the Bible to calm his people down, especially Alec’s daughter.

David reveals how Alec exactly died later in the episode when he crosses paths with Ellie, who was hunting a deer.

Ellie doesn’t trust David and his friend, James, but when it comes to trade, she quickly asks for medicines in exchange for half of the deer she has hunted. While James goes away to bring medicines, David stays with Ellie. He shares his past with her and states that everything happens for a reason.

David hints that there is a reason why they crossed paths with Ellie, who finds all of this ridiculous, but she allows him to explain his theory.

David reveals how the winter has been rough for him and his community. They are struggling to grow anything, and therefore, he sent four of his people to nearby towns to scavenge and look for supplies.

Out of those four, only three came back. The one who didn’t is Alec, who is the father of a little girl like Ellie. Turns out, a crazy man killed Alec, and this crazy man was traveling with a little girl too.

Ellie realizes that David is talking about the man that Joel killed. James sneaks up on them, but David shows mercy and allows Ellie to leave with the medicines.

When did Joel kill Alec?

Back in the sixth episode of The Last of Us, Joel and Ellie traveled to the University of Eastern Colorado, looking for the Fireflies. They didn’t find anyone there but monkeys.

A map hints that the Fireflies have left for Salt Lake City. So Joel and Ellie decided to leave for the same, and that’s when David’s group showed up. Joel and Ellie deduce that these are raiders who are here to steal supplies, as they are carrying weapons such as baseball bats.

Joel and Ellie hide from Alec and David’s group

Joel and Ellie escape through the back door, while David’s group circles the university. Joel and Ellie make their way to their horse, but Alec comes from behind and attacks Joel.

Joel grabs Alec by the neck and kills him. Alec still managed to stab Joel during the struggle. The rest of David’s group comes to rescue Alec and attack Joel and Ellie, who quickly get on their horse and ride away.

Does David avenge Alec?

The moment James learned that Ellie and Joel are responsible for killing Alec, he was filled with the adrenaline to kill Ellie. David, on the other hand, showed Ellie mercy because he saw himself in her.

The community of Silver Lake started being cold towards David for letting one of Alec’s killers go. David assured them that they will follow Ellie’s trail and bring the person who killed Alec to justice. Alec’s daughter interrupted him and demanded Joel and Ellie be killed.

David slaps her and lets her know that though she has lost her father, she still has him, and she should show him respect when he is speaking.

David’s group later captures Ellie. While one-half of his hunters bring Ellie back to Silver Lake, the other half continues to hunt Joel.

Joel gets the best of them and makes his way to Silver Lake, where David relentlessly tries to get Ellie on his side. Ellie learns that David and his people are into cannibalism, and she makes use of every chance she gets to escape.

In the end, she fights David at a burning steakhouse and kills him with a butcher knife when he comes on top of her.
