Plot summary

Haida has still not found a job and spends most of his time playing video games and being a slacker. To not be termed a pushover anymore, Retsuko tells him to get a job and she won’t talk to him until he does.

Meanwhile, his gaming binge with the online gamer friend continues to be obsessive and gradually, Haida becomes a good-for-nothing guy, who also has to leave his apartment due to not paying rent.

He does odd jobs and remains for the rest of the time at an internet café, where he meets Shikabane, his gamer friend. Meanwhile, he lies to Retsuko that he’s still living at home while she and Fenneko have already found that to be false.

Retsuko is told by everyone that Haida is cheating on her with his gamer girlfriend. Fenneko befriends Shikabane and Haida in the game with a fake gamer tag and invites them for an irl meetup so that she and Retsuko can spy on the nature of their relationship.

When Fennelope aka Fenneko doesn’t turn up, Haida and Shikabane head back to the cafe and before calling it a night, Retsuko shocks Haida by dropping by unannounced. She rages on but the situation is made clear and doubts are alleviated.

She then starts cohabitating with Haida which initially cheers her up but soon becomes a dreadful experience. Meanwhile, her mom drops by unannounced and learns of her daughter’s living with her boyfriend.

Haida has to meet Retsuko’s parents but before that, he needs to find a job. No matter how hard he tries, he can’t find one. He eventually meets the parents and after a while of pretending everything’s fine, he confesses that he’s unemployed. Retsuko’s parents don’t take the news with much adversity.

Haida gets a chance to check up on Shikabane but learns that she’s not been coming to the café lately. Meanwhile, a suspicious man with stalker-like tendencies meets Tadano and asks her about “Aggressive Retsuko”, following which she comes to ensure Retsuko’s safety.

Jiro calls Haida and he has to meet up with his family, and Retsuko tags along, despite Haida’s warnings. She is shocked to learn that Haida’s father is a politician in the House of Representatives, and also by the entirety of the house and his family.

Haida’s father tells him that he’ll get a monthly allowance in exchange for not being an embarrassment and tarnishing his father’s legacy since the House of Reps is going to be dissolved and the elections are coming up.

The suspicious guy from before turns up again and catches up to Retsuko. As it turns out, he’s a House of Representatives too, the leader of Party of Rage, Masuo Ikari. He wishes for Retsuko to run for office. Initially dismissive, she’s eventually convinced to run for it.

However, she finally sets off to run but the campaign is no joke and her first task is to come up with a 3 million deposit. After a lot of hard work, Retsuko manages to secure the deposit funds.

Then comes the arduous journey of the campaigning, which turns out to be a bit overwhelming for Retsuko at first, but after a rousing speech from Mr. Ton, she finally picks up the mic and rages on.

Attracting people in hordes and giving her absolute best effort, she proves to be a formidable contender, before Aggretsuko season 5 concludes.

Aggretsuko season 5 ending explained in detail:

Does Retsuko win the ward 8 constituency?

No, Retsuko ends up becoming a runner-up and loses against Haida’s brother, Jiro. She tries her best, though, even managing to move and rouse up crowds of people with her raging voice.

The journey isn’t simple for her, though, as she gets demoralized at first, failing to use her voice and rage in the face of an enormous effort and the work it requires.

However, when Mr. Ton sees her slouching with sadness and wearing a defeated expression unlike her, he reminds her of the time she used her rage voice to take him down at the Karaoke bar, inspiring her again and compelling her to pick up the mic and begin her campaign.

Retsuko, along with Haida and other campaign members try their best but at the end of Aggretsuko season 5, it’s revealed that Jiro ends up winning the election, following which, his cold shoulder for Haida and Retsuko has loosened up by a fair amount.

Who causes Haida’s truck accident?

Haida nearly gets killed by a truck ramming into him but manages to survive. While he sits on the sidewalk, hands shaking and mind absent, Retsuko rushes towards him and gets utterly shocked.

Haida surmises this is one of their competition’s dirty tricks to deter them, but he believes this move is just too far. Meanwhile, this breaks Retsuko even more, who with tears in her eyes, says that she’d pull out from the race.

However, Haida’s newfound determination rouses her up once again, and he calls on her to continue their fight, and do something for people like Shikabane who have given up on their lives.

At the end of Aggretsuko season 5, Jiro meets with his brother and Retsuko, telling them that the truck accident wasn’t his doing, and Haida completely believes his brother.

Does Haida get a job?

Yes, after a series of interviews gone awry and an ever-consuming sense of failure, Haida does end up getting a job. In fact, he gets several jobs leading up to the one he has after Retsuko’s campaign for office.

Aggretsuko season 5 begins with Haida slacking off and continuing to be jobless while gossip about his state becomes all the rage at Retsuko’s workplace. Even though he promises Retsuko he’d get a job but most of his time is spent playing video games, as stuff starts to hoard around him and he officially becomes a slacker.

He later even gets kicked out of his apartment and has to face humiliation at the hands of his younger brother, Jiro. Meanwhile, Retsuko also refuses to talk to him until he gets his life together.

He fails to do so initially, even after taking up a grueling job at a construction site. However, with the support of Retsuko, he improves his state a bit and gets a job at a grocery store.

He leaves that job to assist Retsuko in her election campaign, following which he finally takes another job, but his profession at the end of Aggretsuko season 5 remains unexplained.
