Jamtara: Netflix highlights phishing from Jharkhand in new series

The streaming giant is back with another original Indian series in their roster titled Jamtara – Sabka Number Ayega. Netflix recently released the trailer on their YouTube channel and it promises an intense journey into India’s phishing capital, Jharkhand.

A fictionalised true-crime series, the story focuses on cousins Sunny and Rocky, who run a phishing scam from the village of Jamtara along with their friends. As the news about the scam spreads, it all comes to light and everyone wants a piece of the cake.

Jamtara highlights the risk of revealing personal information like card details to unknown people posing as legitimate employees. Phishing is very real and is made incredibly easy with the internet and in most cases, is next to impossible to track.

It also brings forth circumstances in rural Jharkhand which cause regular young men to divert to crime. The trailer is gripping and engaging and targets the dark underbelly of scams very convincingly.

“The issue of phishing is so common and yet so underrepresented in the media. I’ve been to Jamtara and spoken to multiple people about how these scams are pulled off. The stories are so real and yet so unbelievable that I knew I had to share them with the world.

“Based on true-crime incidents, the series required a great deal of research and detailing to bring to life various characters and motives. I’m so excited to collaborate with Netflix to take this story from a small town in India to audiences around the world,” said Soumendra Padhi, director of the series.

Jamtara – Sabka Number Ayega stars Amit Sial, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Aksha Pardasany, Sparsh Srivastava, Monika Panwar and Anshumaan Pushkar. It has been created by Viacom18 Studio’s Tipping Point and premiers on Netflix on 10 January 2020.
