The Witcher: Netflix releases character introductions and final trailer

With less than 10 days remaining for The Witcher to premier, Netflix has released character introduction for its fantasy series. They have released 3 separate featurettes dedicated to Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri on their YouTube channel along with a final trailer.

Geralt of Rivia

Starting with Henry Cavill’s Gerlat of Rivia, the featurette firstly explains what a witcher is. “A witcher is a mutant, and their trade in particular is monster hunting,” explains Cavill.

It further dwells into the fact that witchers are universally hated by all. Owing to that, it is not likely that Geralt would have a happy personality. However, Cavill says that he is indeed a good person despite the ‘stony’ exterior.

Yennefer of Vengerberg

The next major character introduced is Yennefer of Vengerberg who is played by Anya Chalotra. She was born with a deformed spine and therefore had a tragic and abusive childhood.

She was sold to a sorceress by her father who resented her. Yennefer eventually becomes a sorceress herself and all her deformities are healed. “However, she is never satisfied, always striving for something else,” explains Chalotra.

Princess Cirilla

The final featurette is dedicated to Freya Allan’s Princess Cirilla. She is a young girl who is very loyal to the people she loves. However, she has no experience of the real world.

As she is a royal, she has had a very sheltered life which also makes her very naive. But tragedy falls upon her kingdom and “She loses everybody she’s known within one night,” says Allan.

From these introductions, it is clear that destiny and family are major themes in The Witcher. These, along with properly developed characters with elements of magic and monsters point to a fantasy series full of potential.

The Witcher premiers on Netflix on 20 December 2019. Check out the final trailer below:
